Description
(JUST MY HOPEFUL FUTURE ROSTER AS IT IS NOW)

Larkin-Danielson-Kasper is going to be very solid (assuming the latter hit their potential). 200ft above average hard playing/skating C. Responsible, smart, hard competition. No superstars, possible year-to-year Allstars, just great. Lombardi and Doucet are the boom/bust projects that are only upside value to Detroit. There will be more as is hockey (trades/unexpected FAs). Look at who won the Cup and who lost. Vegas was just great. Top to bottom.

Copp/Ras/Compher can all be moved to wing permanently, which improves team defense while providing more depth, center injury insurance (many know the old center depth hell fire in the past). Combine that versatility with Raymond/Berggren skill guys, Soderblom's mystery box, Mazur's Bertuzzi replacement equivalency, I also think an X-factor could be Buchelnikov, but probably more my opinion than most. The wingers have balance, mix of size/speed/grit. I believe that eventually SY does pull the trigger and moves some form of assets for a stud (KFC/Nylander echelon).

I agree there is some overkill on D and too much for my personal taste, but honestly with late round picks if a player hits a player hits. Wouldn't mind if a Larry Keenan or Red Savage came out of nowhere and took a job from someone because they overachieve. Not likely, but it happens from time to time, and the law of averages says Detroit is due for some luck (injuries/lottery/etc.) at some point in time.

Look a bit further down the road...

???/Buchy - Larkin - Raymond
Rasmussen - Danielson - Mazur
Berggren - Kasper - Soda
Veleno/DJ - Lombardi/Doucet/??? - Dower-Nilsson(x2)/Hanas

Obviously not all hit and others will over perform (Niederbach? not saying him but just an example). Again, odds and law of average. FAs and other draft picks could be added as well.

Wallinder - Seider
Edvinsson - ASP
Walman/AlbertJohansson/Buium - Gibson/Tuomisto/AntonJohansson

Not worried about the defensive group as this is only 1/8 of the D in the organization lol

Cossa
Augustine

Two guys one net?

2 - 2024 1sts as chips for drafting one last time or maybe thats the time to take swings at trades and UFA market (that is better comparatively to the draft next season). One more year on core pieces to develop and 2-4 big RFA signings in the books, so future cap issues shouldn't be a problem.

The main plan of the slow build remains, but if certain offers do arise to help give a jump (Walman exceeding expectations, if somehow a Keller or Nylander offer came up that benefited long term at the cost of significant pieces for the greater good, a couple prospects go "Tage" mode, someone like Kostin or Dylan James becomes a bonafide piece, etc.) then the plan alters.

-Main Point-
- Depends on what type of fan you are. Instant gratification is the goa on CFl, as daily opinions change on this site (Larkin being traded for a cap dump and late 1st to Larkin being traded for a top 10 pick and D prospect as an example). Personally, only Pitt has won more Cups in my lifetime, and that is good enough for me. If the Wings can turn into Carolina/TB/Boston/COL and snag a few more rings while being a threat every year (or possibly start a new STREAK) while I am kicking, I don't see how they aren't the most successful team I've watched in the NHL. As a fan, couldn't be mad at that even living through two decades of ****E (dead wings first... now the going on 8 years strong Holland nuke SY rebuild).

Perspective! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

That Compher deal is awful, I'm sorry to Wings fans that they are gonna have to struggle with that one. He's a 30 point player unless he plays with elite talent

Thank god he's probably ending up on the 2nd line. Even then, this team is obviously more defense orientated than offense orientated. As long as he's good defensively (which he is), then we're fine.

A 1-2-3-4 (in the future) of
Larkin-Kasper-Danielson-Compher is going to be a nuisance.

This was refreshing. Good points.
One move I would have liked to see was instead of trading back in the second round, trade up and grab Cristall. I think he would have been a good snag in the second round considering I think alot of people had him anywhere from 10-25 all season.

Veleno's only 23 yrs old and seems like a quality 4th line centre/useful 3rd line centre. He doesn't even have arbitration rights until '24-25. Much, much more likely Zadina is gone before him. So where is he?

Similarly, Husso is 28 yrs old with a Feb birthday. Even 5 years from now he's still backup goalie age. I wouldn't count on him being elsewhere if he can maintain the growth.

You're way overvaluing Buchelnikov and way undervaluing Rasmussen.

Edvinsson should be ahead of William Wallinder at this point...and probably for future projections too.

The actual contract is not all that awful considering the cap is expected to rise 10M from '24-'25 to '27-'28. Compher's game is also 200 feet so he doesn't just need to score to stay useful. Plus Detroit still has $10M in cap space with a roster size of 24--it's not like he is holding them back from making other moves.

Detroit's strength is it's middle 6 forwards. It's weakness is its top end talent (particularly 1st line wingers where Raymond is still developing but the other side is lacking). Compher will be playing with top 6 type talent (not elite) but better than average (pick 2 of Rassmussen, Perron, Fabbri, Kubalik, Copp, maybe Berggren, and eventually 2022 1st rounder #8 Marco Kasper). So if he adds 20 goals to the team that can still make a large difference as there should be a lot more scoring balance in the future.

With $37M plus whatever the cap goes up next year, the talent surrounding him could get even better. Plus, Detroit has many, many prospects that will be coming up on ELC deals (and multiple 2024 1st round picks) meaning they can go out and add expensive talent (via trade or UFA) and get even better. It's the natural cycle when the team has been awful for the past 7 years.

Personally I want Veleno back. I would want him back more than having Z. There is still upside, and worse case scenario he ends up peaking as a good bottom 6 player which is fine as he will be cost effective. I didn't sign him because until SY makes a move to bring him back (considering who else he has signed) I don't know if SY sees him the same or he would already have a deal. Zadina already has the contract, so I left him there.

Husso could end up being a good backup, and I don't disagree that when Detroit's D corp is in place it will take away from being bombarded so much with high danger shots. Cossa was traded up to acquire and goalies are usually projects. If he is still 2-3 years away, starts out as a back up before taking over, no issue with that. Augustine being drafted also adds a security net considering two higher rated prospects invites competition. If they end up in any way becoming a 1A 1B tandem, that would be a dream. If only one hits its a good thing the other one is there.

I am a big fan of Buch, and have mentioned him in high regard several times due to having some connections with former Russian players. I did mention this is more wishful thinking on my part, but I have also seen some games where I can see him show glimpses of Michkov. At one point this season (fairly early on) he was outperforming Matvei and was seen as a redraft gem. He could end up not panning out as all prospects have that risk. Ras is getting better every year. As a 2-3 LW I see him blending in as a vitally important piece. His offense grew on the wing, and he still has the capability of taking draws and covering down low as a C when needed with his size. He is the top 9 plug that can start one night at 1LW and end them game at 4C, next night play 2C if someone is out or settle in back with the new "RedWood" line.

Edvinsson is ahead of Wallinder. I am of the belief that Wallinder is closer to Edvinsson than other prospects are to Wallinder. Stylistically I like the idea of 6'4 200ft play both sides WW to pair with 6'4 200ft risk taker Seider. Edvinsson looked good with his 9 games. Played physically, potted 2 goals, and his rangy frame paired with the offensively gifted younger ASP seems like it would mesh. I am of the belief that Mo/Ed/WW/ASP are the future top 4. Any combination of them I am excited to see.

Overall, I completely understand your points. Thanks for the comment!

I appreciate your insight. My opinion is that, as the contract as structured in its AAV and term, it is an overpayment for a player who was considered a solid 3rd pair PK guy until this past season when his stock shot up. Unless he suddenly developed into a top 6 player, this is an overpayment and not a good contract. He will not be a pylon on the ice. He will contribute well. But no way any team should have offered him more than 4-4.5 at most on the market. Of course in FA players who come off career years always get paid more.
