There is no way the Hawks are sending anything to Pittsburgh for Granlund, as a matter of fact the Penguins would need to send a significant package to the Hawks in order for them to take on Granlund’s deal.

How does that even begin to entice ANA to retain over 2M for 4 seasons to help one of their biggest rivals trade away an anchor contract?

Not even close to getting ANA to be on board tears of joy

I'm not sure if you've seen the contracts that the Hawks are giving out, but you're wrong on this one lol.

It doesn't have to be Anaheim. It can be Chicago or Arizona - but getting a former 1st round pick who's just coming into his prime, on a cheap deal + a second round pick and a 7th round pick is more compensation than any of these teams will actually receive to be a third party lol.

EDIT: I'm not sure who you think Erik Karlsson is, but with the cap expecting to jump approx 10M in the next 2 seasons and having him literally JUST score 100 points as a defenseman on the worst team in hockey hardly qualifies his contract as "an anchor". He's just won the Norris lol - You're acting like he's awful, they're going to have to give up alot to get him.

Oh I’ve seen them, I’ve also listened to the interviews with their GM and coach and their explanations on why they were brought in. Both Perry and Foligno are widely respected veterans who are loved by teammates, Luke Richardson was with the Habs when Perry was there and spoke glowingly about how good he is with rookies, almost like another coach. Both are definitely overpaid but it is for one year and not all about what they provide on the ice.

Athanasiou is overpaid as well but is a known commodity for the Hawks given he was there last year. Management was also very impressed with his locker room presence and the fact that he had a very good on ice connection with Reichel at the end of the season.

As for Granlund he doesn’t bring anything the Hawks don’t already have or need. Friedman has been reporting the Hawks will still take on cap dumps but since FA is well underway and cap space is becoming more valuable and rare, their price tag is very high. Offering a 6th round pick for Granlund is not realistic, even with $2m retained it isn’t even remotely realistic. The Hawks got a 2nd last season for Jason Dickinson who’s cap hit is less than Granlund with $2m retained.

If you look at the contracts the Hawks gave out, yes, they overpaid to get to the floor, but all these deals are for one year. The Hawks have made the floor and Granlund has two years left. Davidson has leverage here, so like Snowhawk 18 said, they're going to want a significant package coming back to take on Granlund's contract.

They're going to want a significant package to take a 2.5M contract over 2 years for a player who, while he isn't as good as he once was - scored 41 points last year?

I think ya'll are nuts lol. You don't get 2.5M retained + a "significant" package. The hawks are going to need help getting to the floor in each of the next three seasons and won't be a playoff bound team until likely, year 4 or 5 of bedard.

Hawk's fans are insane

If the Pens are willing to retain $2m on Granny as you propose, they won't have any problem moving him. Just don't think it will be to the Hawks.

Everyone said they would have problems getting to the cap floor this year and yet they managed it easily.

Teams need to be prepared to pay the piper or take their cap dumps elsewhere.
