Lamerello wouldn't make the deal unless Willy cut his hair...so no dice.

I sit here & wonder - why would the leafs do this?
1/ Willy could sign that deal in T.O. where he has said he would prefer to stay
2/ we are in win now (actually win yesterday) mode but we’ll move our elite 40+ goal winger in his prime for picks & prospects

That Tavares contract on the books makes it tough to pay four forwards over 10 million. No team is winning the Stanley cup icing that kind of line up, I don't care how good those forwards are.

And yes Nylander is elite, but he's not worth the 10 million that he's demanding to stay on this team. If he gets traded to a different team then he'll sign for less. On the Islanders the highest paid is Barzal. So that's 9.15. And I'd prefer gets traded for picks and prospects than lose him for nothing.

Tavares is off the books in ‘25-26 + cap will be >$90M by then. Leafs have no elite players in their system (maybe Knies 🤞) coming up so I think we should keep the ones we drafted & developed, especially when they are still in their prime. $13M for Matthews, $12M for Marner + $10M for Willy is totally fine going forward. If you can make a hockey trade now for Willy, sure I’d consider it but I haven’t seen too many of those - just rival fans (who love to dump on the leafs #jealousy) trying to get one of our best players for nothing much

Isles don't do this. Nylander is good, but not a 10M player and that's want he wants. Toronto needs to find another trade partner.
