Salary Cap Mode: Basic

Description

Hellebuyck wants 9.5M on his next contract, and the Devils are in a cap position to easily manage that. With a projected 24M in cap space next season, 3.5M of that goes to extending Hellebuyck and the remaining 20M+ is far more than enough to sign McLeod, Mercer, and fill another F and D roster spot. Vezina level goaltending but importantly consistency from Hellebuyck should make the Devils a perennial contender.
More can easily be added to the Hellebuyck trade, but it is just for once season of him. A 1st, a 3rd, a 3rd pair D, a mid prospect, and importantly Vanacek who posted good numbers and is still an RFA when his contract expires seems fair value for Hellebuyck

Miller and Hatakka have no value so there's no reason to trade them, especially Miller who we acquired so Nemec could stay in the minors if he's not ready.

You forgot to sign Bahl, and you're going to lose Foote and Thompson to waivers

Smith and Lazar should definitely not be roster regulars. They should be healthy scratches most nights.

Hatakka is a nothing piece, and we need to keep Miller. Using Kuemper as a comp, the trade is fine without them, but I would not be happy giving Hellebuyck the contract he's asking for.

VV and a 1st. NJ adds more for retention.
I still think Vitek has value so I'm OK either way.

Not many lining up for Helle who has value for sure. Maybe Buf, Edmonton Pit but not any longer, Car after this yr perhaps

We are? I feel like this is most likely reason why we would not entertain a Hellebuyck move. Especially since he wants 8 years.

I think the contract extension is really interesting.
Pros: Vezina winner. Consistency, which in my opinion is the most important attribute of a goalie. Elite
Cons: 9.5M is a lot of money. It could age really badly in a few years a la Bobrovsky

Term is definitely scary. I’m sure he could maybe be negotiated down too. But you guys have your core locked up on really good contracts and the cap is on the verge of going up by significant amounts each season. By the time guys like Holtz, Hughes, and Nemec need extensions there will be enough cap room to accommodate

Yeah it’s definitely problematic at 8 years. The good news is that the cap would likely be around 115M then, and it’s also not a 35+ contract so if he retires before then, the contract just goes away.

Means there would be recapture penalty if deal is front loaded. This would be highly out-of-character acquisition for our GM.
