A Realistic Karlson Trade

Created by: Theo_nollaf
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 9, 2023
Published: Jul. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the Pens are the last team standing for Karlsson based on fit, interest and finances. The trade will need to be a blockbuster, of course, but Pittsburgh has the contracts to move out to make this happen. I don't really understand why people keep talking about a third team, a Norris defenceman should be more than fine at $8 million a year, not to mentions the absurd cost for a third team to retain $2ish million for the next 4 years (The conversation starts with a 1st). If the Pens are looking to only move out money, it will likely be Petry and one of Granlund or Carter. I have Granlund here and Carter being moved out otherwise. The compensation will depend on salary retention and what comes back, but I think the conversation starts with a first, second and top prospect. I know Pens fans won't want to give up Pickering, but I think it's him, Yager or Poulin and picks. Yager is too good and too young of a prospect to give up on and Poulin is going to hopefully contribute this year. You gotta give up talent to get talent. Both teams benefit from the first being in 2025, as the Pens retain a first to throw out the door at this deadline and San Jose gets a pick in a year Pittsburgh will be older, and potentially worse. I also threw in a Stanley Cup conditional for a little more upside on the San Jose side of things. Did I get it right? Feel free to criticize to your heart's contempt

I think Dubas probably offer something around this and SJ said no (Petry might have gone somewhere else too).

Not realistic to think Carter would waive for Philly, he’s got no love for that franchise.

I would think Carter, if approached, could have interest going back on the west coast for his last season. Lounge on the beach, and pretend to care.

Petry no trade clause has to be the hold up here.

It’s possible. At this point a question just as important is who would want him? Everyone in the league saw his play fall off a cliff.

Why? Is this remark based on value or trade protection

Lol kinda forgot what happened there. You get the gist though the Pens trade him to a team looking for veteran leadership on the cheap and the pray he waves. Could see him going to Florida or back to LA otherwise

Also a matter of finding a taker. Eric Staal had more in the tank, for example. Everyone knows Carter’s finished.

If I'm Kyle Dubas I'm not letting Jeff Petry hold up the Erik Karlsson trade. Get on a call, tell him your not going to play him and threaten to buy him out. From a career perspective, Petry would do better in San Jose with more opportunity than in Pittsburgh where we all know he's cooked. If it's just about money anyways, why not get it somewhere where the games matter less and the weather is nicer.

Hard to say what's realistic since Grier likes to lose trades.

Two cap dumps, a prospect, a 1st, 2nd and 4th? Plus you want retention? That's awful for the Sharks.

I'd rather Grier just tell Karlsson "too bad".

I'd think teams are gonna want a sweetener attached if it means taking Carter too. Philly also got their veteran leadership for cheap during free agency frenzy so they pass.

I think this trade is fair if you take Granlund out. Which we could do since our second buyout window is open. I think Petry, POJ, 1st, 3rd for Karlsson at 3 mil retained is a fair trade. Reality is the Sharks will have to take on some cap for any team.

Come on, this ain't fair haha. Is it the best "bad" offer we might get? Probably.

A 1st, 2nd, 1st round prospect, and one cap dump seems pretty fair to me. I don't think your going to get a massive package for him given his cap hit and the limited teams you can trade him to.

Of course it seems fair. You're getting the better end of the deal.
No Sharks fan will be happy with the return.
