How?

A 1st round pick that is going to cover most of the value in any Murphy trade + a rental D (who might be better than Murphy) that would likely fetch them another 1st at the TDL.

That's what I assumed, I originally wrote "that is probably better than" but I wanted to soften my stance in case that there's an argument to be made for Murphy being better because I'm more interested in how much he expects Murphy to return. Maybe he thinks Brodie is a negative asset since there were a lot of people suggesting dumping him for a mid pick/buyout.

Personally, I think Murphy is Justin Holl in a better environment although Murphy is/was considered a top pairing guy, while a Holl 2nd pairing who fans generally thought was better suited for the 3rd pair. My bias against him is another reason why I reworded my statement.

Mccabe is better defensively than Murphy and he's not very good defensively. Murphy is the best on a terrible Blueline. On a better team he's not better he'll be exposed as not that good. I wouldn't trade for Murphy period.

That's what I imagine would happen.

So unless he's making half what his cap is, he's overpaid. McCabe is a good 3rd pair guy at 2 million. But he's not top 4 and if we had to pay his full wage, he'd be a problem

Oh boy...you clearly have been drinking too much of that leafs haterade...Brodie is a better rounded player then Murphy. The reason for trading for Murphy was cap related here, and that he plays with a nastiness to his game which the leafs are clearly looking for.

Perhaps the better trade here would be Brodie for a 2nd and then leafs try to sign Dumba to a 1 year 4.5M.

I would probably make that deal if I was calling the shots for Chicago; having said that, I am not as much of a Murphy fan as most Hawks fans so I’m not surprised if you get a lot of push back.
