Weaponize cap space

Created by: Brian9Rogers
Team: 2023-24 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 14, 2023
Published: Jul. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pick up a few solid picks, grab a couple young cost controlled LD and a long term back up goalie with starter upside. Add some vets to flip at the trade deadline for more assets. Sign some low risk younger UFAs that could work their way to a longer term contract or flip for assets at the deadline.

Would love to see them use the cap space since they have the pockets to do so. Could really ramp up the rebuild around bedard

Pens decline, Granny’s buyout is easy. Petry is the contract they need to move.

Canucks pass, would rather just wait for Myers' contract to expire then paying a 1st to get off of it

Your paying for Murphy and the benefit is moving off those deals

The first and third trades at least make sense. The second one seems like big wishful thinking.

Ya know you get Murphy in his place as well, right? Got to think it's at least tempting, though probably would have been more so prior to the draft and free agency.

I'm very against the Canucks trading high-round picks, unless it's for a star player. A potential lottery pick for Murphy, I'll pass. I'm even more against trading them for dumping cap hits, especially when one of the guys has 1 (one) year left.

Hawks don't make any of those 3 trades. Hawks probably value Murphy as a 1st rounder. They aren't taking $11m in cap for a Rathbone/Blackwell swap. Dumping 4 years of Campbell takes equivalent of two 1st's. Broberg doesn't have that sort of value. Granny takes more than a 2nd to move.

Like I said, it would be more tempting prior to shopping season so they could load up to compete now and avoid it being a lottery pick. But I hear ya.

Murphy probably blocks a trade to Vancouver and the Nucks shouldn't do that anyway.

Edmonton is likely rolling with the same goalie tandem as last season which is what they should do.

Idk about that last trade.

Murphy isn’t that good… he’s also 30. This is terrible for the Canucks

Canucks hard No!! Seth Jones back instead with 2M retention would get you the first round pick and that player package.
