And the Leafs say no to this one... Also, Calgary would say yes, giving up Backlund, Hanifin (2 guys who aren't resigning) and a 2nd or 1st for Kotkaniemi and Nylander w extension is a great haul. Getting the best player in the deal is typically the win and Calgary would be getting by far the best player and a younger guy who's starting to find his groove

Calgary doesn't need an overpaid bottom 6 center like Kotkaniemi though they might agree to take him on anyhow as part of the cost of acquiring Nylander with an extension. You could get Backlund and Lindholm with 50% retained on one of them for Nylander with an extension. The Flames might even agree to throw in Vladar.
