Which is so frustrating as he is ironically one of the best cap value contracts. Hes a 3.5-4 mil cap player on the open market. We have him at 2.1 mil.

Reaves at age 39-40 at the end of that contract, getting into fights lol. Should be a crime for assaulting the elderly lol

He shouldn't be on the team this year. He's useless at hockey. He can intimidate. And I could accept (though not my preference) acquiring him 5-6 years ago when he was a competent 4th liner who could intimidate. But he's now an actively bad hockey player, who makes the team worse when he's out there to intimidate. Gah

I'd imagine Toronto is just going to buy out Matt Murray.

Then the above roster doesn't even work. They'll be 600k less of cap and 2 mil less of cap next year.

Yeah no sense in trading Jarnkrok.....you just have to replace him with 800,000 player so the cap saving is just 1.3m

Gotta move a couple players (Timmons & Lafferty?) and run with 20.

Well the Leafs brought in Reeves for this year. Next year and the year after, he can waived/demoted and the cap hit will be about 100,000 per year. I doubt if he even sees the AHL, just a paper move, so in effect he gets paid 4m for one season. Hawks kinda did it this year with their overpaid UFA signings for one year.

No Timmins and Lafferty have such little effect on the cap that you have to replace with someone who is making at least 800.000.
Buying out Brodie....who has no effect on the cap this season, saves you 5m and then you can have a 22 man roster and replace Brodie with a 2m Dman.

Still seems like some negative 4D chess for trying to get Reaves to play one season lol

Why buy out Brodie? I'd imagine they can move him somewhere without having to eat the buyout cap hit next season.

Well it's only money for the Leafs owners Bell and Rogers.
It kinda shows that the Leafs went all in this year with their UFA signings.....though I still don't know how they manage the cap.

True. But can you think of one team on his trade list that would want to take on his 5m cap this season? I can't. And I don't see wanting to go to a bottom feeder with cap. He's better off taking his buyout money and signing with a contender for 1m

It was box that Dubas built. Murray and the other poor value signings he made hopefully will be gone soon.

Retain 20%, and it clears up $4M in cap and cuts $1.5M off his price tag for whoever wants him. $1M on the books this season or $2.5M next season when both Matthews and Nylander need new contracts?

He can only block a trade to 10 teams, and I bet there's someone on the remaining 22 that would be willing to take him on at 80% for future considerations (a la Pacioretty).

Lmfao TOR had 14 million dollars to work with the offseason (that’s with Murray) trade or buyout that grows to 18-19 million. This is the most money TOR has got to use in a offseason since the pandemic.

Good lord your takes are bad

Good thought on the trade. We'll see if any of other teams want him.....there are still cap issues for the other teams, and well some of the teams in the East have no desire to help the Leafs.
IMO Sabres would be a good fit. They have the cap and need defensive help. Buffalo is close to home and has an easy Eastern Conference travel schedule for Brodie. Maybe the Wings would think the same

14m isn't that much when you have to fill two top LW positions, 3rd and 4th line centres, a RHD and RWer and RFA. Your math and takes make no sense. Stick to your 19 man rosters.

I think they have to pay someone to take Murray and maybe send someone retained back in a swap for the bottom 6. I just don't see it working otherwise. They f***Ed up putting themselves in this spot

Your plan to get cap compliant is to dump the Leafs best defensive player when they've made themselves defensive worse all summer? Seems like an absolutely terrible move

Why would he sign for 1 m? He's a high end defensive dman...
