Initial Creation Date: Jul. 24, 2023
Published: Jul. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The biggest question marks are goaltending and which version of Skinner they get. Would be nice to see an in house replacement very soon for Skinner. But otherwise, this would be a strong contending team in short order with both Dahlin and Power.

skinner turned 31 not that long ago and based on his play, the next two seasons should be productive at the very least. he's also been reliable in terms of games played in his career. his agility makes him tough to square up in the offensive zone. he doesn't have a major injury history, there's a chance he's still productive through the end of the contract. plus if the cap increases are close to the projections, his number is much less onerous in the final two seasons. i think our goaltending is fine, but i would like to see if calgary starts slow whether they'll embrace a full rebuild and maybe rasmus andersson becomes available to round our the top 4 for the foreseeable future.

The problem with skinner isnt his ability to produce, its his ability to produce at a rate that outpaces how bad he is defensively. He has to essentially be top 10% in offensive goals above replacement to be worth anywhere close to his deal.

I think he'll continue to produce, but its hard to imagine that he will be able to keep up a top 10 percentile pace. At some point, the value the sabres add will have to be on the margins and one of the easiest is swapping Skinner out for someone who may not provide as much raw offense, but isnt quite the liability defensively, thus adding more total wins to the team.

Alternatively, there's a good chance Benson is his direct replacement. But it's hard to make that bet before he's ever played a game in the NHL.
