Why would they trade a 1st and Johnson to replace one large cap hit with another?

Johnson just scored 24 goals as a 20 year old and has 2 elc years left, which magically is when Benns contract is up.

Why wouldn’t Toronto just use Benn + Johnston’s cap hit and give it to Nylander? Who’s far better than Benn and far better than Johnston will ever be.

Dallas passes. Benn was back to his old self last season and has a NMC, Johnston was in Calder conversations last season, and with Dallas's recent ability to draft really well, I don't think they give up that 1st. Not to mention, Johnston and Benn's production last year far outweighs Nylander's.

A. center is more a position than wing for the Leafs right now and moving forward.
B. getting a 1st round pick
C. 2 players for 2 years at the price of 1 player for X years. Of all teams - Leafs more than anyone need to spread the wealth around more evenly.

Nah, cap's rough and Johnston is too high potential and on a an ELC unlike Nylander who's gonna demand a hell of a lot of cash.
