San Jose declines. 40% retention for 4 years on Karlsson is way too much 4.6 mil a year 18.4 million in total over the rest of his contract. That's an awful lot of money to pay a player to play for another team. Then they'll have to hope Nylander will extend with them and that'll cost them another 10+ mil a year meaning Nylander would effectively cost them 11.5 million in 23-24 r and 14.6+ mil/yr for 3 more years after that.

Or SJ could flip Nylander at the deadline for picks/prospects but they'd still be paying too much of Karlsson's salary.
