Lines Id try out

Description
Fwd 1: Thought about breaking this up but with Quinn out it just doesnt make sense to mess with what should produce consistently at 5v5

Fwd 2: Greenways best numbers came playing with Cozens (small sample size). Maybe he can provide some defensive cover for him and Casey and pitch in a few goals as well.

Fwd 3: Bit of a gamble here but Im curious to see if Krebs' defensive numbers from last year were just a product of playing with Okposo/Girgensons or if he can be that two way 3C. Peterka and Rousek can keep up, might be some growing pains there though. Peterka could also benefit from Krebs' alleged playmaking abilities (sorry but until he actually does it were all just guessing)

Fwd 4: I hate this line so much, its not going anywhere though.

D 1: Controversial, but 26-10 actually had strong XG numbers when they played together last year.

D 2: Erik Johnson sucks. Ironic, but Im using Power here to shelter EJ's ancient ass. I think in this set up, Power should take a step forward because the pairs are more balanced. He'll get more of a green light offensively, and fewer total mins at even strength.

D 3: Far cry from your traditional third pair. Last year, the Sabres got run over late in tie games cause Granato couldnt trust his 3rd pair, like at all. But in this set up, Samuelsson and Clifton can match up against anyone and not get steamrolled. In fact in situations where you need to play Power and Dahlin together to generate offense, you can bump this pairs TOI up if you are shortening the bench (Jokiharju and Johnson dont really offer anything offensively).

Goalies: A lot of ppl think theyll go 3. They might, but theyre not moving Jokiharju, so youd need to find a taker for Lyubushkin or Olofsson. and at the moment I just dont see it.

They would probably flip rousek and olofsson but no arguments here

I thought that may be the case too but I hesitated because Granato wasnt shy about benching him when he needed to. Idk, I could see it going either way.

A lot to like about this.
Moving both Casey and Payton up the ladder.
Granato knows best, but since Girgensons and Okposo are very strong fore checkers if Olofsson would work out well playing on that line.
He is going to score whoever are his line mates and as you said about sample size, that line was together only 9 minutes last year but had two goals, +2 and 57.1% Corsi.

Most obvious is the LHD with RHD!
It is interesting that during the 21-22 season Jokiharju was paired with Dahlin 60% of the time.
But that same season when he was paired with Power, 7 goals were scored while only 5 were given up.
This past season Henri played with Power 62.8% of the time 39 scored 39 given up.
I will put my trust in Granato, he will figure out the best combination of talent, skills and personalities.

It's funny how people think lines are set in stone. They change game by game, period by period and even shift by shift.

They went 3 last year, so why not this year?

And why do you have Rousek in and Olofsson out?

Until he proves it, Olofsson is better than Rousek and Rousek is waiver-exempt. SO....that solves your conundrum.

Levi also can be sent to ROC to play if he is not playing in BUF.

There is no roster logjam, in my view.

They aren’t set in stone. These are just lines I’d like them to try out

Yeah I admit the 2nd line is really just gut feeling given the sample, but granato is high on greenway is obviously so they must see some additional upside to his game. Think it’s worth a shot in the interim until Quinn is healthy.

The power joker combo is kind of an odd one cause I don’t think it was bad just feels like they are never quite on the same page. Granted, power was literally a rookie so, could be mostly driven by that.

And yeah I’m all in on the L/R split and I think they are too. The last notable research done on this publicly was by someone currently working for the Sabres and he found it mattered quite a bit.

I'm okay with giving Greenway more of a chance to start the season but if he doesn't show any production or top 6 contribution within the first 15 games then I'd really like to see him on the 4th line in a checking role. Rousek deserves a shot as a 13th rotational forward, but he has to earn that in training camp. I'd like to see Mitts stay in the middle, probably as the 3rd line center and have Krebs play with Cozens on the wing.

The good news is we have some good depth up front and on the backend and many of our players are versatile in that they can play multiple positions. Who knows the top line might be Cozens-Mitts-Thompson or something crazy like that

Greenway is in a 4 man rotation on 4th Line, when Okie doesn't play. Kulich is making the roster, or the teams goals go down.

Kulich starting in Rochester, unfortunately. Granato loves Greenway, he wont be a 4th liner, also a bit unfortunate but c'est la vie.

To me, that's even more of a reason Kulich stay's, they need his scoring and if Greenway is playing, that means Olof is scratched. Only way I see Kulich in ROC, is if he doesn't have a good preseason. Even at 19, there's nothing left to prove. Some have said don't burn an ELC year, that's nonsense, we have a man down and need his scoring, esp. if Olof is in the doghouse.

I would prefer him with the Sabres and olofsson on a different team but I dont think thats how its going to shake out. We'll see.
