Leafs Tax

Created by: fangm
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2023
Published: Jul. 30, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jarnkrok was traded less than 18 months ago for a 2nd, 3rd and 7th.

Signs with the Leafs sets career highs.

Puts up 20 goals while getting paid $2.1M.

I bet he's worth at least a 2nd right? NO. The capfriendly gang says he's worth a 4th maybe less.

I guess if they wear a Maple Leafs then we don't care about goals, defense, contract value, they instantly have no trade value.

OR….

1- no one on here wants to help the Leafs with their Salary Cap problems- but that’s not unique to the Leafs, u just seem to think it is with your little “victim” role-playing nonsense
Fact is, there are very few teams in the League who do wanna halo other teams with their Cap problems, & their fans realize this. It’s really quite obvious.

2- fans (and teams throughout the league) realize that Jarnkrok’s career highs in goals, assists, & points came bc he was on an offensive juggernaut like the Leafs- and NOT bc he suddenly developed his offensive game to new heights after a decade in the league.

3- Jarnkrok is a solid player & a “good” 3rd liner. But most teams in the league already have plenty of guys that can play bottom6 roles, and for cheaper.

So to get “value” out of Jarnkrok, you’ll need to find a team/fanbase that actually cares enough about improving their bottom6 to give up a good asset that u want,
and that’s understandably a pretty tough sell.

Well, understandable to most i should say,
since you’re obviously having such a tough time with it that you’re on here whining about it

Good luck
If it makes u feel better, as a Sabres fan, I’ll offer u a 2nd for him if you’ll stop acting ridiculous- bc no one wants to read tantrums from a Leafs (or ANY other team’s) fan(s)

Also,
Take a deep breath & calm down. Every person u talk to on here could offer you a 1st for him- but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen in REAL LIFE.
This site should be FUN, & it’s clear you aren’t having any.
Maybe take a step back & reevaluate what it is you’re coming to this site for in the first place??

1. Noone really needs him, he's not a key piece, and you can find cheaper bottom 6 players
2. Leafs need to clear cap, causing values to shift in players that they move
3. He "kinda" put up career highs, he played at the same pace in 2019-2020, and better pace in 2020-2021, and that was mostly from playing in the leafs top 6
4. He's gotten older, and now taking on his contract is a commitment instead of a rental

He's not bad, he's just an unnecessary piece on a team that needs to clear cap space

Very well said. I’d also add point 4, being Jarnkrok got moved for a 2nd, 3rd, 7th to a Calgary team that was 1st in the Pacific and making an all-in push. Teams notoriously overpay by massive amounts when at the top of the league if they think a player can be that one final piece in their cup run. Calgary obviously thought that with adding Jarnkrok to their bottom 6 depth. Florida thought that too when paying a 1st, 4th, Smilanic for Chiarot. By this logic, Detroit could move Chiarot to the Leafs for a 1st and the Leafs would get a steal of a deal while the Wings get screwed by “Detroit tax” cause they get less than Chiarot got the last time he was dealt.

Tough market to move any player. Most teams are up against the cap and the ones that are not are rebuilding which means they are looking for first and second round picks.
At the moment it is a buyers market for players.

I constantly see fans looking for the highest paid player and dumping them for garbage. In real life with your own assets, you wouldn't do this, you'd look for the best return or not move the piece.
