ABSOLUTELY NOT! Hawks are not eating $6M for 4 years of EK. Not without a handful of top prospects and 1st round picks coming back.

Hawks are eating $2.875 for 4 years or EK's contract per this scenario. San Jose retains 50% of base and Hawks retain 50% of that half traded.

Great, still need a LOT more. That 1st covers Petry's 6M for 2 years, IF he would even waive to go to Hawks. Now you still have to account for 4 years at 2.8M retention, AND the lost retention slot for those 4 years. Where is the payment for that, because a 3rd round pick does not buy that kind of money.

This leaves the Hawks with 1 retention slot for this trade deadline with multiple players they may want to use it on. Perry, Foligno, Johnson, Dickinson.

Terrible cap management with no appreciable return for Hawks.

Cap spikes by almost 5 mil next season and will continue to rise after that. 1st round picks will continue to grow more valuable. Sure kick in another prospect but at having 5 first-round picks for the next two seasons is amazing and if you don't draft 5 players you can definitely use those picks in trades.

In 2-3 years you are starting to hand out big contracts to your prospects. You have tied up a retention slot for 4 years for NOTHING. The cap goes up and the Hawks need retention slots to build the team. That kind of retention costs serious assets. You are just giving Pittsburgh free money. That is not how the system works.

I want nothing to do with retaining for 4 years on EK, unless I am getting something that seriously moves the needle for the Hawks.

In 3 years the Hawks have only Jones on thier books and have more cap space than they can fathom. They are in 0 pinch of cap issues in 3 years even with the $2.8 of EK cap holdover.

I wouldn't do this trade as Chicago. But the valuations on Petry are delusional. He's not some trash player just because he's a bit overpaid.

Thank you and the Hawks need help on the RD, plus his contract is only 2 years.

He's objectively better than Murphy overall. He was fine when he wasn't with Dumoulin. And Dumoulin has destroyed every single partner he's played with for two years. Or if you look at what Klingberg and Gudas got as UFAs. The fact that casual fans don't grasp that simple observation is bewildering to me.

Hawks will have Jones and Murphy for the duration of Petry's contract. As a Hawk, he'll be a 15 min a night 3rd pair guy who isn't getting PP time either. The "help" the Hawks need on the right side is young RD prospects. Not an overpaid 35 y.o. vet.

As for the trade, terrible value for the Hawks. $2.8m in retention for four years costs at least a 1st if not a 1st plus. Petry takes at least a 2nd and 3rd to move if he's coming to the Hawks. Your deal is light a 2nd and a prospect in my opinion.

Fair assessment on the return. I think there is a decent chance this type of pass-through trade happens and I am just trying to figure out the fair value. Sharks will get the bulk of the picks and prospects in the deal of course.

At the end of the day I think the deal will look something like this...

    Pens get: EK
Sharks get: NHL player, Two 1st Rd, 2nd Rd, 3 prospects
Hawks get: NHL player, 1st Rd, 2nd and or 3rd Rd, prospect (maybe shed some fringe players like Entwistle)

Can't see the Pens giving up all that for EK65. Three 1st's plus other picks and prospects? Karlsson isn't worth it - even at 75% retained.

Im confused, are the Pens getting Erik Karlsson at a 2.875 cap hit and only giving up a 1st a 3rd and a cap dump? The pens don't have the assets to get Karlsson at 50% retention let alone damn near league minimum.

Yeah I don't see Pens giving up the entire farm of picks for EK65 at 75% even...... Like don't get me wrong that would be valuable af when he is healthy, but you would be banking literally everything on him being healthy at that point and that you would 100% win the cup for the next 3 years. Which I don't think happens. You'd be better off taking EK65 at like 30-40% retained with Sharks retaining 20% (minimizing return to them to 1- 1st (lottery protected), 1- 2nd, Granny, Ty Smith, and Poulin) and getting the other 20% from the Hawks (Petry (1.1 retained [Pens dont need to save retention slots] ends up only saving the 1.1 mil the last 2 years of EK's contract), 1- 2nd and 1 - 3rd (Picks for retention the last 2 years of EK 65 and Petry is now at value for his 2 years)) roughly evens up the value.
