Possible Interesting Draft Pick Scenario

Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2023
Published: Aug. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's say the Red Wings have yet another disappointing season; they end up with the 13th pick in the 2024 Entry Draft. Meanwhile, Boston has completely plummeted performance-wise and ends up with the 9th overall pick. Boston has decided to retain their pick and decides to attempt a quick turnaround to get back into the playoffs in 2025.

Detroit now has the option to either keep their 13th pick, or trade it to Ottawa in hopes that Boston continues its downfall for a better, unprotected draft pick that, in theory, could end up the 1st overall pick.

What do you think Yzerman would do in this scenario?

*Conditions: Detroit has the option to send their own or Boston's 2024 1st round pick. In the event the Bruins' 2024 1st round selection is a top-10 pick, Boston can retain the pick and transfer their 2025 1st round pick instead. Detroit will then have the option of sending Boston's 2025 unprotected 1st or their own 2024 1st to Ottawa.

In this scenario, Ottawa would end up with Boston's 2025 1st.

13th overall is still fairly high and Boston could bounce back.

And any player drafted in 2025 would be a year behind in development compared to a player drafted in 2024.

I think that'd be the most likely outcome, yeah, but I could see both... especially if Boston has a major sell-off at the deadline this year. The ideal scenario obviously is Detroit gets in (pick somewhere in the 20s,) and Boston hits rock bottom, allowing Detroit to scoop up the 2025 pick and enjoy the "Tank" from the sidelines without the pain.

Definitely keep 13. Can’t try and galaxy brain it and give 13 to have Boston bounce back and have pick 25 or something. I’m sure they’ll have a talk about it but I can’t see them trying to do that

Only way Boston finishes in the bottom 10 next year is if they loose Pastrnak or McAvoy for a large portion of the season. Even without Bergeron they are at worst a bubble team like Minnesota. Lets say one of them does get injured and they do sell at the deadline. It will mainly just be exterior things like their pending UFA defensemen, plus a chance of DeBrusk or Marchand. Regardless it's very unlikely that the team will be bad enough in 2025 to have an even higher pick than #9.

Ideal scenario, Detroit shocks and gets a wildcard spot, Boston ends with the number 11 pick. Detroit gives Ottawa pick 17-18 (NYI for reference) and gets to pick using the B’s 11th.And so I dream.

Most likely Detroit picks 11-15 and Boston gets a pick from 17-25.
