Arpon Basus 2024-25 Habs

Created by: Jaskwatch
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 4, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In Arpon Basu's most recent columns on The Athletic, he posits some fairly splashy moves he could see the Canadiens making leading up to the 2024-25 season. He's typically fairly reserved and doesn't go out of his way to make bold predictions so I thought it was rather of note.

The projected forward and defense lines are from his article. He doesn't speculate on goaltenders at all so I made the assumption that he sees things as being relatively status quo. He has written on a Montembeault extension in the past but the term and cap hit is just a top of the dome prediction on my part.

Ylonen was also due a new contract. Since Rafael Harvey-Pinard was curiously left out of the projected lineup and the two would occupy similar roles in the lineup, I gave Ylonen RHP's current cap-hit.

Nylander is obviously the big splash. The $10.5M figure comes from Basu, the 6-year term, while arbitrary for this exercise, is what I can see happening as Nylander seems like a player interested in maximizing his future earnings. a 5 or 6 year deal would presumably allow Nylander to sign another multi-year deal before he reaches the back half of his 30's.

The trades are merely sketches of what the Canadiens would look to do when trading these players, not complete mock trades. Add or subtract value where you see fit. Again, these are Basu's rough outlines of trades, not mine.

As for the omissions, Basu did not speculate on what happens to them. RHP is waiver eligible so we'll assume he's to still be in Laval (personally don't agree), Pezzetta and Kovacevic stick around as extras for their respective postions. Harris is the only one that should fetch assets. If he is to be traded, I'd like to see him traded packages with prospects to land a bigger fish, but that's for another thread.

Montreal decline. They have too many foward and better prospect that could make the team next year (Roy, Beck, Heineman) Just to name a few.

They could consider for picks.

Dvorak could be a very nice add on.
He has not worked out very well in Canada, maybe he could recapture his half a pt per game performance.
He could win FO and PK as the 4th line center.

Very unlikely Buffalo would give up the 14th OA from the '21 draft.
Alternatively, Buffalo could offer the 10 OA from the '16 draft.
Rosen is a prospect, Jost plays in the NHL.
He had only 3 fewer pts than Christian at less than half the cap hit.

First of all, Wilson is way better than Anderson, and everyone agrees that it's a terrible contract. Secondly, Washington can afford to give him that awful contract because they aren't competitors, they're Ovi's retirement home. New Jersey can't afford Anderson this year, and having him on the books next year would effectively prevent them from signing Mercer to a long term deal.

Anderson isn't worth half of what he's being paid. If he were on the Devils right now, every single Devils thread would include a trade paying to get rid of him. He is a negative asset.

In fact, even if he had no cap hit, he would still not be a top 12 forward on the Devils. He is worse than the entire top 9, doesn't have the defensive impact or niche utility of McLeod and Bastian, and isn't good enough to justify not giving Foote a chance.

Wilson averaged like 4 more goals per 82 than Anderson and was slightly better defensively. Anderson played 33 more games and was a top 30 play driver in the league with his very good xGF/60.

Context as to why Wilson got that contract doesnt matter, thats the market now. Any player with the same likeness will look at that contract and use it in negotiations.

All in all Anderson never had negative value and your perception of the player doesnt set the market. Players and GMs do that with how much they want and how much they like the player

Anderson is literally Nate Bastian without the high end defensive impact at 3x the cost lmfao

dom luszczyszyn lol

Hes worse than Jfresh cards

and even then 88th percentile for xGoals. 82nd for Offensive. He just sucks defensively which is fine because hes a forward. You could easily hide that and it would get better away from the MSL system that is all offence and no defense for forwards. Even Suzuki has bad defensive numbers in that system

Any analytical person who weighs defense for a forward as much as offence is a fraud is my eyes. Like one who view offence the same as defense for d men.
