I saw someone else point out trading for him

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 4, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
They're probably better off aiming for a cheaper to acquire and likely to resign at similar amounts as Karlsson even with retention hanifin. And they'll get hanifin through better ages

(This does assume one of Peterson, hanifin or graves can play Rd)

They'll be cap compliant when they waive one of the tenders

Dumping nearly 8M is going to cost that alone, now make an offer for Hanifin

No, pens don't do this. LD is set and Graves/Petey don't play on the right side.

If the penguins hadn't signed Graves I would've happily traded for Hanifin.

Hanifin stopped making sense once Graves was signed. They have too many LD now. None of them play RD either so zero point in this deal.

As I said one had to be able to play Rd. If none can this is a non starter

Is ruuta that bad? I figured he was neutral and the second was for Granlund. Then a first, third and whoever their best or second best prospect is (as I said I have no idea) for hanifin

IMO neither is bad but Calgary doesn't need either. It's like how Monahan is not a bad player but cap space cost money now

Over the Crosby era I remember three dmen that were comfortable playing both sides. None were high end either. Despres, Oleksiak, and Cole. That's it. It is a very small percentage of dmen that can.

Ton hainsey would make 4 (we had him with Rielly a bunch on the Leafs). But point taken.

Monahan at that point looked bad as he was coming off the year super hampered by an injury wasn't he? A back injury I think? You'd know better

Hainsey and the entire 2017 PIT defense sucked once Letang was gone. So I wouldn't do sides him as capable of either side at all for PIT at least. I'm talking bottom 5 unit in the league. It's ironic because in 2016 the Pittsburgh team defense was way better than most fans gave it credit for. And then in 2017 the Pittsburgh defense was way worse than fans acknowledged.

I'm pretty sure (only because I remember it being pointed out when we signed him) that hainsey led the d in toi/gp in one of your cups as Letang was injured

No Monahan was coming off his left hip surgery. He got the right hip done the year before.

Yes but he was worse at LD. If you recall that was one of the main issues he had is Chicago was playing him at LD and they acquired Scuderi who was a LD. I distinctly recall informing conceited Chicago fans about how disastrous that trade was going to be for them. But they were adamant that having a true left defenseman would be beneficial.

Either way there are other examples too like Patches cost Vegas a promising young player.

Unless they trade Pettersson it makes zero sense. And given the contract and acquisition cost of Hanifin, I'm skeptical it would be worth doing unless someone is completely overpaying for Pettersson.

Daley is one of the few who actually suck on their "natural" side. Kinda like Ovi trying to play RW. It just doesn't work

That doesn't change the fact that he sucked. PIT forward lineup and goaltending were best in the league. Defense didn't need to be competent. They were only average with Letang and completely transformed into below average when he was out.
