Created by: Grusofsky96
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2023
Published: Aug. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dubas managed to get Karlsson and Pitlick without trading any top prospects. While also managing to dump all 4 cap dumps we had on the roster. If anyone thinks he didn’t single handlely win this deal by miles you are dead wrong.

He did win the trade big time, but Carter is more of a cap dump than Desmith

Getting excited for a $10 million near future Petry style player.

It's a loss.

This is some loser thinking. The guy is a premier offensive d-man. It's a huge win for a team that struggled with the transition game and the 2nd power play unit.

Good luck, WHEN the EK65 experiment explodes in your face.

$10 million for a 40-50 point Dman.

Yah I'm really worried about a team taking one last shot at a cup who took a chance on a 3x norris trophy winning D while losing a bunch of negative assets in the deal.

See SJS for your future, they had kept their old core together for too long chasing a Cup.

Which they never did capture.

Not really even similar players at all lol

Why you so salty about the Pens making a great trade? Haha

True, Petry is better defensively and more physical type.

So, $10 million for a player less capable of Petry.

There's no way you just said the reigning Norris winning 100 point scoring defenseman is worse than Petry haha. What a joke.

No - 10mil for a significant upgrade to Petry. And also dumping Petry, Granlund, Rutta, and Desmith. 4 contracts they didn't like. The trade actually saved cap. You're so lost lol. People on here said it would cost a 1st and 2nd alone just to dump Petry and Granlund. Somehow they dumped Rutta and Desmith as well and got Karlsson. This trade was fantastic.

You do know the previous 3 seasons Karlsson scored 97 points totaled.

I surely hope you are not expecting another 100 point season from him.

Honestly you should happy if he scores 200 points total in the 4 seasons remaining.

I am well aware. And no - I'm not expecting that.

None of this disproves the fact that this was a fantastic trade by Dubas and that Karlsson is a big upgrade to Petry.

I would like to know who made the trade for Dubas, it was not him, if Dubas made the trade it would have included two 1st Rd picks and one 2nd Rd pick and two 4th Rd picks.

Or Grier is more of a noob than the Pitt management.

Man you'll do anything to not give Dubas credit haha. At least you're acknowledging it's a good trade then lol. I don't care if the devil himself came and made the trade - mkaes no difference to me

Not a great trade... no other team wanted EK65 @ $10+ million, Dubas did a little dance to make it work.

It's objectively a great trade. Little dance lol - get a grip. Put your personal bias aside for 2 seconds

LOL... Genius, no.

He got lucky in Toronto, who already had Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kadri, C. Brown, Reilly, Liljegren, Freddie and Woll before he took over as GM.

A little less lucky in Pittsburgh; same good core depth (Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Rust, Rakell, Letang, Petterson and Jarry except they are all senior aged compared to the junior age players he started with in Toronto).

Same mistake made in both 1st days on the job; in Toronto adding J.T.'s big contract which ruined any chance at roster depth. Now for the Pens he adds EK65, IF the previous management didn't do so well on signing the core to team friendly deals, that EK65 contract would be an anchor added by Dubas.

Finally we agree... that the trade is questionable right now.

It can go both ways. Great he unloaded a single bad contract (which he could have bought out) but if EK65 all flash and no D style of play doesn't help the Pens win or his injury prone days creep up, it's a bad trade.

Nowhere did we agree on that lol.

He unloaded 4 contracts btw. It was a pretty amazing trade overall. "If the guy plays bad or gets injured it's a bad trade" - well......yeah lol. You can say that about any trade. That's why you grade the trade now - not 20/20 hindsight. And looking at the trade it was pretty great what he was able to do.

One bad contract, Granlund (which could have been bought before the trade).
Petry is a slight overpay but nothing too damaging, Rutta is paid correctly for a bottom pair Dman and DeSmith is an average backup goalie but Dubas wanted to pay Nedeljkovic that backup money instead.

Granlund, Petry, Rutta, Desmith were all either bad/overpaid contracts or ones they wanted to get rid of. People on here were adamant that it would take a 1st and/or 2nd just to dump Granlund and/or Petry alone. Dubas dumped them both and two additional contracts while getting the reigning Norris winner that just scored 100 points. The team got younger, better, and saved cap space. If this trade was proposed by a Pens fan a week ago people like you would be calling for their head because it's so unrealistic
