That's an assumption wants Hertl for seven more years. Might be a poor long term deal for any team.

True, but better to suck it for a year than be stuck for seven years of Hertl. And Bruins aren't desperate . They will take a step back this year, still have a full arena make the playoffs, and see what happens in April. Gee you're worried about Bruins. How about that San Jose lineup.

Canucks decline. We have plenty of wingers who can score 15 goals

San Jose is full rebuild mode! Just tore it down and next year should have a top 3 pick plus 2 more 1sts and 33 mil cap space after resigning all their guys.

As for being “stuck” with Hertl he is a top 6 C and should be good production for the next 4-5 years, but the last 2 probably aren’t great years.
That being said waiting 1 year to restock the C position rather than funnel more draft capitol away isn’t a bad idea! Next year has 4 mil extra cap plus you recover the 4.5 mil bonus overage and would be in good shape.

boston doesn't have a first this year. they're in it to win. they can't afford to suck this year. san jose can, and they will

what value is he to a rebuilding SJ team? That contract is about to turn bad and they won't be good for years

So by Ive away a marketable 1C because San Jose will be bad even though this is where Hertl just resigned a year ago…knowing the team will be bad…
