The nature of UFAs means they shouldn't be guaranteed to resign with their current club.
Leafs might have more upcoming UFAs then any other teams. Matthews, Nylander, Bertuzzi, Domi, Lafferty, Brodie, Klingberg, Giordano and Samsonov....that's 43m that. If you're a Leaf fan, let's hope the GM next summer spends that money wisely, and as you suggest it might not include Matthews and Nylander.

PS. Minten I believe in scheduled to be back in junior....certainly not NHL ready.

It might not... I was hoping they would have moved Marner for young guys with promise but whatever... Hopefully Trelving spends wisely and who knows, maybe Matthews gets extended (favourite player) and the Leafs win a couple cups... Or they flame out in the 1rst round and the core 4 leave... that's not my choices that will affect the outcomes... that's Treliving

PS. I have a huge bias on Minten, saw a Leafs preseason game vs Ottawa; Minten had a goal and 2 assists (I believe) and was easily the Leafs best player when guys like Nylander and JT were playing

There is only one leaf that makes players around him better, Marner. He is the leafs most important player because he's the only guy who plays on the #1 unit in every situation. When the leafs are shorthanded 5on3 and there is a d-zone faceoff, Kampf takes the draw and as soon as possible switches with Marner. Matthews, Nylander and JT don't get the responsibility Marner does and he still leads the team in scoring last year.

After years of watching him play... I find that he's the 4rth most valuable Leafs player behind Matthews, Rielly and JT... JT is purely off-ice... Rielly is their number 1 defensemen, puck moving, and produces 5 on 5 (that's why they got Klingberg) and Matthews who's the Leafs 2nd best defensive forward and by far the best offensively (.622 gpg while creating most if not all of his chances), most goals since coming into the league etc. That makes roughly 29 mill in cap space to fill out the other positions, Nylander, Sammy, Woll, Domi and Bert are either on great contracts, can be movable if contract disputes are going nowhere, provides what the Leafs need etc. That's another 20 mill in cap space, roughly... Kampf's another necessity to add the defensive element but we'll not include him... This leaves 34 million for everybody else... Is a soft, overrated defensively, 1 dimensional forward really worth 33% of the remaining cap space? or 2-3 younger guys who are not as good right now, but could be better and still have money left over? I don't think so

There is no saving this organization. Its now or never with this team. And if they dont win this year, they will never. Even worse considering they have no picks and no prospects. Treliving is just there to hang out and collect a pay day and be shannys fall guy. Mafia bosses Always need a fall guy
