Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Foegele, Warren
  2. Kulak, Brett
  3. McLeod, Ryan
  4. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
  5. 2026 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Getting Nylander gives Edmonton 6 genuine top 6 forwards for the first time in a decade and allows them to have two lines were the C doesn't need to carry everyone.

The deal also opens a spot on the blue line for Broberg and saves them about $2M in cap space.

So they are essentially swapping Kulak for Broberg in their lineup, Timmins as the new #7, Foegele for Nylander

Cost of those upgrades +$2M in cap space is downgrading McLeod for Holmberg (who actually had a better PPG last year) and two 1sts.
EDM
  1. Holmberg, Pontus
  2. Nylander, William
  3. Timmins, Conor
Additional Details:
Nylander comes at 50% retained. Phili is retaining it.
2.
TOR
  1. Konecny, Travis ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. Sanheim, Travis
Additional Details:
Phili is also retaining 50% of Nylander.

They could potentially flip all three guys they get here at the deadline and turn them into another 1st and 2nd or something similar in value.
PHI
  1. Brodie, TJ
  2. Foegele, Warren
  3. Järnkrok, Calle
  4. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)

I wouldn’t even trade you TK for that lol. Two 1sts, 2 cap dumps, and Brodie doesn’t even get TK with no retention let alone 50% retention, Sanheim, and retention on Nylander lol.

Ehhhh, Edmonton declines. They're essentially trading 3 key roster players for 1 player (who is VERRYYY good) + 2 fringe NHL players.

Edmonton's top 9 is probably worse imo, we lose our young 3c and a good depth player. Then have to overpay nylander or lose him the following year, making it harder to resign bouchard and drai to long term deals

It's fitting that the word crazy is part of this title. Toronto makes out like bandits in this. Essentially give up one high end asset who only has 1 year left on his contract, and a bunch of minor pieces, some of them causing cap issues, in return gets 2 high end assets and minor pieces on reasonably priced contracts, one major asset at 50% retention, both high end assets under control contract longer than 1 year. Pretty much at the expense of the Flyers, giving up those 2 major assets, and retention on 2 players, while getting back minor pieces with questionable cap hits, for 2 late firsts, one of them 3 years from now. Like you said, crazy.

Yuuup. We could move nuge to 3rd center and run:

Kane-97-Brown
Hyman-Drai-Nylander
Holloway-Nuge

But that's where you have a massive drop.....

That's way too much for the Leafs to give up the Philly trade. Eight years of Sanheim??? Wow, that's awful for any team

Leafs obtain Konecky, Sanheim, Kulak and McLeod for Konecky, Brodie, Holmberg, Timmins. Don't see how the Leafs are better this year.

I don't want any retention unless we are getting prospects and not hopeful flips.

No way it gets worse,

Nylander is in a different world to Foegle, one is a borderline cap dump best suited as a 4th liner the other is a top 15 winger (arguably top 5 or 10).

Also You overestimate the downgrade from McLeod to Holmberg. One had 23 points in 57 games last year the other had 13 points in 37 games. McLeod definitely has more potential (could end up being a low end 2nd line C) but Holmberg is definitely at the very least a high end 4th line center, likely an average 3rd line center, he just doesn't have the same potential but looking just at the next 1-2 years he will likely do the same job McLeod would.

Kane-McDavid- Hyman
Nuge-Drai-Nylander
Holloway-Holmberg-Brown

That's infinitely better than

Kane-McDavid- Brown
Nuge-Drai-Hyman
Holloway-McLeod-Foegle

I'm a big analytics guy

Nylander>Konecky (but konecky plays the type of game that Bertuzzi/Domi do and the leafs seem to want that)
Sanheim>Brodie (Analytically Brodie is the best D in the league but Sanheim has played 1 season where he profiled as a #1D and projects as a #2-#3 guy for at least the next 4 years, again I know there is risk he plays like last year but if it works the potential is that we get a top pairing guy like Florida/Montour)
Kulak>Timmins (Timmins has way more potential, he profiles as a top pairing guy but injuries are a real concern. Kulak profiles like a younger Brodie and very similarly to Schenn which seems tohave been someone who complemented Rielly well).
McLeod=Holmberg (I just like the potential of McLeod and it made the cap work, maybe Holmberg has more trade value cause of his contract).

We are also taking on three contracts that we have no desire for and are being told "flip em when their values drop by playing on a bad team". Instead of gaining gamble flip material, I'd rather prospects. Those two firsts will most likely be late 1sts, so they aren't super exciting.

that 3rd line is trash lol, Holmberg is not a 3c and we still wouldn't be able to resign bouchard, willy, and drai. Bad cap and asset management imo.

Mcleod>holmberg and its not close. If mcleod stops being a pass first center then he starts scoring way more, hes also really good defenseviley and pk's well, holmberg is no where near mcleod.
