I think both teams decline. CGY will want a package with a 1st or equivalent prospect in it.

NSH has enough LD already. Re-signing Hanifin would use up too much cap space that could be put to better use elsewhere (like at center or RD).

Unless McDonagh (NTC) or Josi (NMC) are on the way out, I dont see why Nashville would do it. It pushes us right back to where we were with Ekholm on the team with too many expensive LHD. so we either justify it by putting Josi offhand with McDonagh again.... or we bury a 6 million dollar dman on the third pairing.

The 2nd tilts it towards an overpay. That's getting close to what NSH got for Ekholm. Hanifin isn't quite as good, and is only a rental.

The Ducks retained 50% on Lindholm and took back a cap dump in Moore though. Plus BOS was much higher in the standings than NSH is projected to be. Even with Hanifin, it's unlikely that NSH's 2024 1st is going to be as late as 22OA.

Hanifin isn't as good as prime Ekholm but current Ekholm is quite a step down from prime Ekholm too. Hanifin is at least just as good as current Ekholm if not a bit better. He's also much younger

I don't think Ekholm has fallen off nearly as much as you think. EDM certainly doesn't have any buyer's remorse.

He was like a top 15 defenseman in the league in his prime. He's certainly not that anymore. Arguing whether Edmonton has buyers remorse is stupid. Nobody is calling him or his contract bad. He's just not as good as he used to be. Of anything I think you vastly underrate Hanifin

I don't know if Ekholm was ever a top 15 defenceman. Maybe in a random season here or there, but not consistently. I do think he'ss a top 30 defenceman today. That's not much of a drop off (if any) from earlier in his career. Hanifin I'm not nearly as high on.

I would say Ekholm is certainly somewhere in the 25-35 range today.

Hanifin has been one of the best 5v5 defensemen the last 3 years. you absolutely underrate him
