People on this forum in general don't have a concept of surplus value and it gets annoying. Prudent teams don't buy rentals unless they come at a relatively reasonable value

Trade deadline is different bc it’s often filling holes left by injury or disappointment or whatever. That’s the market, and even then the smartest teams don’t spend big on rentals.

I wouldn't trade Jack Hughes alone for that entire package let alone adding a scoring winger, starting goaltender, and a first

I don’t see Winnipeg getting a significant haul for pending free agents who will be 31. I do believe each player on their own can secure the equivalent of a first round pick with retention to different teams, but that’s significantly below the skill level of both players.

The reason … the acquiring team has to buy them out of free agency and both players should prioritize length of contract. At 31, that’s petrifying.
