He's not always a liability on D, and he sharply trended in the right direction the last 30-35 games. Also, Kyrou was third on the Blues and second among their forwards in takeaways last season. He was one outside the top 50 in the league in that category, and would have also been third on the Flames last season. Just for a reference, he had 12 more than Lindholm in fewer minutes. His transition work from D zone to O zone is the #1 reason the Blues led the league in rush goals. So no, he's not just a one zone player. He's probably just a young player who needed to learn.

Nylander had 70 takeaways last year. That does not define a good defensive player. I didn't call him a 1 zone player either, I called him 1 dimensional. I am aware he is fast and good on the rush hence why I grouped him with players like Nylander and Ehlers

Not at sure how you can suggest a player among the leaders in takeaways and/or a top 10 in the league transition player is "one-dimensional ". Taking the puck away from an opponent is the most obvious form of defense. Carrying the puck away from your own zone is another form of defense. Nobody said either of these guys is a Selke candidate. I'm saying they're nowhere near as hopeless as people make them out to be.

Intercepting passes in the neutral and offensive zone or on the powerplay are not defensive plays. Takeaways are like plus minus, it's an unreliable measure of defensive play. It's just a count of how many times the puck ends up on your stick in a change in possession. Jacob Trouba could lay an open ice hit on someone and if Zibanejad gets the puck Zibanejad is awarded a takeaway even though Trouba caused it to change possession.

Defensive play is inhibiting scoring in your own end. Guys like Erik Karlsson and William Nylander are not defensively reliable players yet they finished 8th and 11th in takeaways last year.

First of all, where did you get zone stats for takeaways? More importantly, yeah, taking the puck away from the opponent is defense regardless of where it happens. Intercepting passes is defense. What do you think stuff like the neutral zone trap is? If the opponent can't even carry the puck into your zone, that's fantastic defense and it limits goals against. Defense is not just strictly in your own end. No clue how you got such an idea. Or why you'd pretend all of Kyrou's takeaways were unforced gifts handed to him in the O zone.

Takeaways happen everywhere on the ice. If your argument is a good defense is a strong offense then sure you are welcome to that opinion but again I named 2 players that were top of the league in takeaways and yet both players are highly considered to be huge defensive liabilities. That is not to say that strong defensive players can't have high takeaway counts (ie Marner lead the league and both Slavin and Fox were top 5), I am saying it is correlation not causation. High takeaways does not make you a good defensive player but good defensive players can absolutely have high takeaways. Both McDavid and Draisaitle were top 10 in takeaways too and neither are reliable defensive players.

You seem to have this idea that I think Kyrou is incapable of stripping the puck of players by his own accord, that is completely false, like McDavid for example he is very capable of using his speed to catch a player lift their stick and turn around with the puck. That is a takeaway, that does not make you defensively reliable. Look at it this way, Kyrou had 54 total takeaways this year. There are 82 games in a season that's 0.66 takeaways per game. If takeaways were such a game altering stat in defensive play then scores in the NHL would be a lot closer to basketball than they are to soccer. You are vastly overvaluing the importance of takeaways when it comes to defensive play. And if your entire argument about Kyrou's defensive play is a single flimsy stat then you are just wasting my time

That's all wonderful, but I didn't say Kyrou was good defensive player. I said he's not one-dimensional.

But yeah, stripping an opponent of the puck is playing defense. Again, no clue how one could figure it wasn't.

You are mixing up my words
I never said takeaways aren't playing defense, I said they aren't a good indicator of being defensively reliable.
This entire thing was about his 2-way game, since it is borderline non-existent he is a 1 dimensional player. No clue how one could figure otherwise
