Swayman can't be traded for a year due to his arbitration settlement. I like the trade for San Jose. I'm not optimistic about Hertl being a long term value

I don’t believe that’s true. Can’t find reference to it anywhere, but maybe I’m just missing it

The basic concept of Hertl for Swayman is good. Boston gets a #1 center in his prime to win now and San Jose gets a young #1 goalie to win in the future. Other Boston players are needed to make capspace for Hertl.

I think the basic construct is Swayman and Grz for Hertl.

Can player salaries be retained for just one year or if you retain, it is for the life of the contract? I’ve never been quite sure on that point

I'm pretty sure retentiion is for the life of the contract.

The balancing of contracts would need to happen here, but I do think there is a construct of a deal here.

Boston’s cap position requires secondary contracts to be included because I see no reason for San Jose to have to retain in this deal.

Swayman - Probably the best young goalie in the league with significant upside

Grz - short defenseman who is really good at engaging offense. His defensive stats show something you would not anticipate at that height. A good, solid two player no matter who he is paired wirh. He’s a guy you look to replace, but then keep practically when you assess total needs

Then the question is whether Frederic, Geekie, or Forbort (with a defenseman coming back) is included. I mentioned Frederic because he’s got interesting upside as a gritty solid third liner with defense. There is a lot of a young Al Iaffalo in him.

Forbort is easily the worst player of the group, but his salary ends this year

That’s OK. I really want to see what Zacha can do with Pasta and eventually DeBrusk at LW once Lysell is ready.

The concept of trading Jeremy Swayman is flat out terrifying to me. I believe he has the talent to be the best goaltender in the league long term. I’m also not someone that believes the goalie narrative. Most teams that go cheap eventually regret it.

Part of me wonders, in reality, if Boston would have to include Merkulov if this deal really would be discussed.

I do wonder if San Jose would be on Ullmark’s no movement clause list

Agreed that Sharks should not retain on Hertl.

I posted a trade that was Swayman, Grz, and Frederick for Hertl.

Next question is if Sharks should get a pick in addition. I think so. A 2nd or 3rd.

That was the reason I included Merkulov. My assumption is any prospect not named Lysell, Lohrei, or Poitras would be open.

I would guess that Merkulov, Harrison, and Beecher would be next on the Bruins list. I’d rate atleast two of those as more attractive than a 2nd rounder from
Boston, but I’d be open to substituting a 2nd in 26 or 3rd in 25.

Sold! As originally proposed with Merkulov.

It would be ok for the Sharks to keep Hertl too. I hope he stays with the Sharks. He's a great player and could give tge Sharks some continuity through the rebuild and byond. But we do need a #1 goalie of the future.

Merklulov or an equivalent pick would have to be included.

Sharks should be much more interested in Swayman than Ullmark. Especially for Hertl. Maybe Couture for Ullmark?

I’ve got limited interest in acquiring the length and age of Couture’s contract. He’s still a good player, but I have reservations about how that contract ages.

If SJ is involved, I assume it is for Swayman
