Don't know why Seattle would do that.
Also you realize other teams have to be under the cap as well right?

Oleksiak had a NTC and really seems to like Seattle and I can't see the Avs trading Byram. Nylander would increase any team's offense, but the Avs already have a significant amount of strong, expensive offensive talent.

They get the better defender and clear long term cap they will need for the likes of Beniers and Wright. It's a trade that doesn't leave the leafs with a huge downgrade but changes their dynamic on defence.

This wouldn't be too bad though. While I agree Brodie is better, the defence does need some brute force and Brodie doesn't have that. I think Oleksiuk would offer a new element we lack without too much of a downgrade. It's a 1 for 1 I think works out for both teams. Brodie is better and is FA, Seattle doesn't get worse and frees up long term cap space

Man I hate that Oleksiak has 3 more years on that contract, Brodie signs 3.5 for 3 after this year and he will be serviceable until that expires then maybe sign him to a league min contract and throw him on the 3rd line

I'll admit Brodie is a bit better, I think Seattle would like the elements you want Oleksiak for. I also think that, yes cap flexibility in the future, but not that necessary. Beniers gets big money but they also have alot of contracts expiring that might not be back next year. No contracts longer than 4 years and when Wright needs an extension Oleksiak will be off the books. I think they would rather have the cost certainty and a 2LD for the next few years since they don't have any young guys to take that spot yet. Evans will probably be ready to take over there as Oleksiak gets fazed out. There is no guarantee Brodie resigns as well so it could leave them rather screwed after this season.

3.5 isn’t too much for the best defensive defender

He’d be 36 when that contract ends that’s not too old if you still got it
