Three more moves before the season opener

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2023
Published: Sep. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) SJS trade opens up cap space for this year and Rutta is a more defensive-minded Dman than Myers. Hopefully it would be a slight upgrade as a trade-off for adding cap for next season.

2) DeSmith is a solid upgrade at backup G, which the team will need if they want a chance at the playoffs.

3) The remaining cap space is allotted for a one-year deal for Bear, who can fully rehab from surgery and come back in the new year fully healed.

Pretty reasonable for both trades, Habs fans seem to think they'll get a 3rd for DeSmith though lmfao if i were them i'd be thrilled to get a third much less a fourth. But looking at what Tatar got i don't think the Canucks will need to pay bear that much. I recon he'll end up getting 1.2-1.4

Overall it costs a 3rd to dump Myers and add those three players that could help win some games this year. To me that's well worth the price.

Why is everyone putting Jan Rutta to the Canucks?
What's the reason?

No clue, the original rumor was Labanc for Myres after the bonus but to me Rutta is way more valuable than Myres and I would want at least a 3rd in return.

I like it from a Habs perspective. Honestly I think there is a Myers to MTL option there as well. Habs have a boatload of cap space this year and IMO, Van shouldn't be adding cap next season at the cost of Myers this year.

This doesn't make sense for SJ. Myers and Rutta are both defensive minded. I think SJ prefers the fact that Rutta is locked in for another year. There's no RDs in our system that are likely to make the jump to the NHL for another 2 years so having him there will keep some roster stability.

I think they also care about the amount of cap space they have at the deadline as well as just the "money owed" that people are obsessing about.

I'll admit I'm not as familiar with the mindset of SJS management. This ACGM assumes they might want to free up a little cap space for next year, but if they really value Rutta's role on the team then they'd probably want to keep him around.

I think it's partly the cap math (it gets VAN compliant with a 23 man roster) while adding a RHD that can at least play a 3rd pair role. I have no idea how SJS really values Rutta, but in this ACGM I'm assuming they see some value in
a) saving $4m in cash, and
b) freeing up $2.75m in cap for 2024/25.

Personally I think the mistake that a lot of organizations make with rebuilds is not surrounding young players coming up with competent teammates. And with how thin the Sharks RD situation is, Benning is the top RD right now, with Burroughs (a 7th d-man) right behind him without Rutta.

In addition to that, Sharks have a lot of young talent that will be making an NHL impact this year and next and stepping into bigger roles. I think after this year, they'll be looking to legitimately improve the team while Hertl and Couture are still good players, having a player like Rutta makes a lot of sense, and if they aren't competitive, then he'll get picks at the deadline next year.

That's just how I personally feel the SJ management is approaching this team in it's current state
