4C and 3RD

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2023
Published: Sep. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After the Tatar signing the top 9 seems pretty much set but the weak spots seem to be 4C (currently between Meyers, Foudy, Pavel, or shifting a winger to C), and the last D spot (currently between JJ, Malinski, Hunt, and Schueneman)

Leafs fans seem to be willing to dump both Timmins and Lafferty to get under the cap and a 3rd + 4th seems to match the fan base asking price

Would need to put MacDermid on waivers and run a 22 man roster to just barely fit under the cap but I think its worth it to address the teams 2 biggest weaknesses

Leafs Nation is large so lots of different opinions but I am not in favour of moving either of these players for that type of return; although given circumstances - offer seems fair enough. Personally I would prefer to run a 20 man roster than dump good players for mid picks

It's a really bad trade for Toronto.

Should be a 2nd and 3rd for fair value.

now that the 3rd line is solidified i think we go more of a veteran presence on 4C. If we didn't sign tatar i think lafferty would have been a good addition but you won't get his best results running 4C, i think that role needs to be filled by someone with more grit. And same kind of thing for timmins, i do like timmins and if we go another route next year with toews or byram i think adding him to the mix would be a good addition but for that bottom role we need someone who can last during the playoffs and play with some grit if manson goes down, timmins does not fit that bill.

3rd and 4th is more than enough, especially with the Leafs cap situation. More like a 4th and a 5th. Would be ideal to round out the roster. Even better if we could actually find someone to give up something....anything....for K Mac.

Really tho? Timmins you can make a case for getting a second, but given that he would need to pass waivers and you guys are in cap hell lowers his trade value. And you can't seriously want more than a 4th for Lafferty if we're giving you a 2nd for Timmins

Given we just got Tatar, I don't think the Avs need to target these guys anymore.

Chicago had offers for a 2nd for Lafferty last year at the deadline. I'd be shocked if the Leafs moved him for less than a 3rd. He led the league in PK Zone entries which is a big deal, means he's the best a transitioning from defense to offense on the PK, Leafs have only two other guys who even played consistent PK minutes upfront so Lafferty shouldn't be on the trading block.

Timmins as you said 2nd is about right, maybe with cap considerations he brings in a third.

I assume the Leafs will move out salary another way.

The current $2.9M (I think) that they are currently over by includes Jones and Robertson which is $1.5M so they are only $1.4M over. Holmberg is waiver exempt and that's another $800k then they could waive Gio or Gambrell and be compliant to start the year.

Why? Tatar is a pure winger he doesnt do anything to fix the 4C or 3RD/LD weak points on the roster

I don't follow the Avs closely but I'll chip in with a few general insights.

1. Tatar is a guy you sign to help you from November to February when you are trying to push through an 82 game schedule. He adds nothing to a playoff team. I'd be surprised if the Avs made this signing intending for him to play in Game 1 come April/May.

2. The holes you are trying to fill can wait till the deadline. You might end up trading for a guy who was going to be waived or getting someone on waivers or having a young guy overperform. Sakic has been good at leaving space for the roster to grow and plugging holes near the deadline. I'd expect him to do the same.
