There's no way the Canucks would trade Demko for that

Also what even is the Schenn trade...?

Schenn played the best hockey of his career with Rielly, I'm shocked they didn't sign him. And I don't really think Brodie is very good, at least he wasn't last season.

-First trade is a huge price to pay for what's basically a marginal upgrade. I do think Rasmussen is better than Holmberg; I don't think he's a 1st & 3rd round value better than him.

-Another deal where you're paying a big premium for minor upgrades. Trenin is a physical guy, sure, but he's also basically been a 20 point guy til this point in his career. I don't think the difference between the two players is worth one of the Leafs' few remaining decent prospects and a 3rd rounder.

-I think Vancouver passes. At a quick glance I don't think the cap works ($5.65M going to the Canucks with only $5M coming off their books.) Jarnkrok is a good player but with the Leafs' cap situation he is not going to be valued anywhere near that, unfortunately - I would argue that most of the surplus value you'd get from including Cowan gets wiped away by including 2 extra years of Calle's age-33 and -34 seasons at $2.1M. That basically makes the deal Samsonov for Demko straight up and I don't think the Canucks bite on that one.

-Huge, huge overpay here. Nothing against Schenn but he's 34 a few weeks into the season and has two years of term left at a $2.725M AAV. I do think he's a worse, if cheaper, player than Brodie; I can get the idea of adding surplus value for the cap savings but not a 1st rounder's worth. Nick Robertson, though, is of minimal value to me until he can prove that he can stay healthy for a full year.

Shocked that they didn't overpay him? 3x2.75 is a terrible contract. Even if you for some reason think Brodie isn't good, at least his contract is expiring. It would a terrible idea to turn that into a bad contract AND add a first round pick on top of it.

Honestly, none of your trades make sense. They're all really lopsided in value and some of them are a real head scratcher in terms of how they'd make the Leafs better

I'm sure the Canucks cap situation changes at the trade deadline with other trades

Rasmussen is a massive upgrade, you obviously didn't watch him last season

I like Yakov Trenin and he's another physical body in the lineup with skill, underrated player.

Schenn is way better than Brodie and the proof was in the playoffs

You aren't going to win trades straight up, you're overpaying to win in the playoffs. This team is going to be hard to play against in the playoffs

Vancouver's cap is the knee jerk reaction why I think the trade doesn't get off the ground. Even if the cap wasn't an issue, though, I think it's a bad deal for them. If Demko is playing up to the level that he would be an upgrade over Samsonov, then I can't imagine that Vancouver would want to trade him with 2 years left on a reasonable deal for a rental, a borderline cap dump, and a prospect.

I don't disagree that Rasmussen and Trenin are upgrades over the guys you're sending out - what I think is that the prices you're offering are well over premium. Holmberg/1st/3rd for Ras is a comparable package to what the Wings just gave up for Alex Debrincat; and spending Minten and a 3rd to upgrade Lafferty into Trenin feels like a lot of capital to give up to upgrade your 4th line. At some point you are paying top dollar for marginal increases - these are the types of packages that could be used for a top 4 D or top 6 winger, and you're sending them out for middle 6 and 4th line upgrades. It's just not good asset management.

Schenn was a great value as a rental making $850K last year that only cost you a 3rd round pick. He was 5th on TOI amongst TML defensemen, and only got incidental PP & PK time - and it's worth noting his results were aided by a ton of luck - a 10.6% on-ice shooting percentage and a 97.7 SV% behind him at 5v5. He's a 3rd pair guy at best - which is fine! - but giving up a 1st rounder to pay a third pair guy $2.725M through his age-36 season? Again, just a terrible use of a pick that you could use to score a much more high value rental at the deadline this year.

Seems like a couple overpays but I would assume NSH has to accept those, the only hang-up would be that we just signed Schenn so it's bad PR but a 1st??
