Lindy just laid into Holtz in press conference.

Put him in situations where he can succeed perhaps

Was kidding.

Holtz has been better lately. And good in games when we need a goal. But the bad passes do seem to come in the worst spots.

Tierney protects the puck at least. He isn’t going to win the o-zone on his own…or lead to many GF, but hasn’t really hurt us.

When Nico was a rookie, he would talk about areas on the ice that you never want to turnover the puck. As a forward, the two worst spots were (a) crossing the center of neutral zone and (b) just inside blueline in o-zone. He was a rookie.

Holtz has shown he can be wise with puck. But needs a page out of Nico playbook.

Just hate seeing our coach sell Holtz out like that (and make Novo look like an idiot at same time).

Tough all around.

Spencer Martin is on waivers.

Maybe as good of goalie as we all see on waiver wire.

Not sure what over roster moves would have to be made and if they are worth it. But mildly serviceable goalie if we are adding one to the mix.

Send Vanacek down, pick up Martin?

Worth it?

I agree with @dgibb10 to let Holtz play with some talented players

He can't carry a line by himself with his skating abilities.

I would play him with Bratt and Hischier to generate more scoring (Toffoli is struggling)

Can also depend on situation. We never had had fixed lines under Lindy anyway.

Could do something like...

Tied or up a goal
Toffoli -- Hischier -- Bratt
Meier -- Mcleod -- Mercer
Haula -- Lazar -- Bastian
Willman -- Tierney -- Holtz

Down a goal
Toffoli -- Hischier -- Bratt
Meier -- Mcleod -- Mercer
Holtz -- Haula -- Lazar
Willman -- Tierney -- Bastian

But once we have our full lineup playing, its hard to see Holtz getting a ton of top-6 time.

Full lineup
Toffoli -- Hughes -- Bratt
Palat -- Hischier -- Mercer
Meier -- McLeod -- Holtz
Haula -- Lazar -- Bastian

We don’t even necessarily need him in the top 6. Just with quality linemates

Meier-McLeod-Holtz is an example of giving him quality play driving linemates

If it got ugly...and Holtz was stuck at 6-8 minutes on fourth line...(and Lindy wasn't going anywhere for this year or next).

Would you trade Holtz straight-up for...

Gibson (G, ANA)
Markstrom (G, CGY)
Knight (G, FLA)
Merzlikins (G, CBJ)
Allen (G, MTL)

Hanifin (LD, CGY)
Middleton (LD, ANA)
Pettersson (LD, PIT)

Chinakhov (W, CBJ)
Johnson (W, CBJ)
Turcotte (C, LAK)
Frost (C, PHI)

(yes/no for each)

Yeah, I think I am in similar place.

Gibson -- Yes, with retention
Markstrom -- No
Knight -- Yes
Merzlikins -- Doubtful
Allen -- No

Hanifin -- Only with extension
Middleton -- No
Pettersson -- No

Chinakhov -- No
Johnson -- maybe
Turcotte -- No
Frost -- No

Maybe Merlikins/Chinakhov together, especially of Elvis was retained, and we filled in gap from off roster

"Not to toot my own horn at all, but everyone knew that when you were losing myself and Graves, two veteran defenseman that are real good players… they kind of knew they were going to have some growing pains with those young D-men."

Nemec has been better than Severson and Luke has been better than Graves.

Hamilton injury, Siegs and Marino stepback have been the issue.

We’d be in a MUCH worse spot with a current lineup of

Graves-Severson
Bahl-Marino
Foote-Miller

And really on a healthy roster
Hughes-Nemec
Siegs-Hamilton
Miller/Bahl-Marino

Does severson even have a spot? Maybe graves does over bahl, but are you taking Severson over Marino Dougie or Nemec?

I think the presence of Luke Nemec Mercer Jack has made other fanbases vastly underrate holtz. If you’re the 5th best young guy from the 2019-2022 drafts on a teams squad, as opposed to you send him to any number of teams where he’s been their top prospect hyped for years and certainly getting top 6 opportunities, it’s a different look.

Look at how Knies is viewed for example. Nobody else in that system so despite being outproduced by holtz at every step, he’s viewed much more favourably, because the prospect competition isn’t there and you’re competing with Jarnkrok for top 6 linemates

I think some see him as another Nils Hoglander type.

Others, as mini Laine type.

Others, for what he is, high ceiling offense guy who is still progressing.

I imagine teams that could use a scoring winger would be all over him if made available (EDM, FLA, NSH, NYI, PHI)

EDM - I'd pass

FLA -- Florida fans always say they will never trade Knight. But if they can move Knight, extend Forsling and Reinhart, and add a solid piece, I doubt they would flinch to do it. And I'm sure Knight would like playing an hour from home. And with Hughes'.

NSH - Askarov...sure. But that would be off-season deal since they will want to extend Saros first.

NYI - Romanov and Wahlstrom maybe? But I think Isles move a veteran and try to keep Dobson and Romonov together.

PHI - Philly and NJ dont trade...but I would also worry Hart's next contract is going to be ginormous. I don't think he is $8m goalie.

Darren Dreger says that Hanifin decision is likely to come at All-Star break…the home stand before could be big factor.

1/20 EDM
1/23 STL
1/25 CBJ
1/27 CHI

Could see them go 4-0…keep Hanifin for 2023-24…and lose him as UFA.
