Yeah, Matthieu has a very back loaded contract, retaining on that for three seasons is a real buzz kill of an idea.

Why wouldn't the ducks do it? They have the cap and they get a 2nd it's less money than Montreal took on Petry for the same return.

It's just over $3M in real money.

It's ~38% retention on the 9.3 million he has left in real money. That's 3.65 million dollars, and three years of a retention spot.

This is a great deal for Anaheim.

      Normally the rule is:
      $5-7M = 1st
      $3-5M = 2nd

Anaheim are paying near the lowest that you'll ever get a 2nd just for a salary retention.

You also aren't considering that the Ottawa pick is likely 50th not 64th. The 50th pick is worth 70% more than the 64th. The values drop fast in the 50s.

      Very clever scenario, thanks!

If I see it correctly for the Leafs its pretty much Jarnkrok for Joseph (with a retainer)? Plus a 7th?

Why would Tre say nay to that? I don't know much about Joseph but he cant do less than Jarnkrok in the playoffs which is pretty much ZERO. Def worth the gamble imo and pretty sure in Tre's. Joseph has upside and Jarnkrok is a fading serviceable bottom 6.

Battle of Ontario would be a fraction more exciting at the least...

The economics of a large market Canadian team against a smaller market California team are vastly different. You don't have to look any further than that the Habs drew 21k fans per game last season and the Ducks only 15k. That difference in revenue allows the Canadians to do things like Petry that Anaheim would never consider doing.

Not only it is now unlikely that Ottawa pays anything to move Joseph but him at 1.8 AAV is actually a great bargain of a contract. Dorion would be extremely dumb to do this

Particularly when he could just move Kubalik and be done with

Almost every analyst disagree with this and says Dorian has offered a 3rd to move him and teams have countered with a 1st and nobody has gone below.

Dorion is clueless most of the time but when did he offered a pick to take on Joseph? Before training camp? Joseph has made it very clear that it would be a mistake to pay to move him

So thankfully teams asking for more is saving Dorion from himself once again (and thankfully he has not accepted to pay more because that would have made his long list of ultra terrible moves). Hopefully he realizes that he has no choice to move Kubalik at a discount

I don't disagree that it's a bad move for the Sens.

Just seems from the reports it's what Dorion is looking/willing to do.

Sorry for coming across a little harsh. No need for that tone, my apologies.

Don't worry you were absolutely not harsh in comparison to some reactions sometimes lol

With the way the media acts and the lack of information we have in reality, we can't really draw any conclusions. Sure, Dorion has likely discussed trades involving Joseph, Brannstrom and even Kubalik but it doesn't mean more than that. He doesn't seem interested in paying anything to move Joseph, they wanted to acquire him for a while and they did in the recent past, plus extended him to a 4 years contract just a year ago. They have faith in him

And I think he's a bit "scared" to trade Kubalik because of the optics regarding the DeBrincat trade. But hey, he put himself in this situation, that's his problem (and ours, Sens fans lol)
