If this is at the deadline, and NSH can't get a better return by retaining on Barrie or someone else, then I think NSH would happily be the 3rd on this if a 2nd is what it gets them.

I lovingly refer to this year's Leafs as Team All-Gas-No-Brakes. Making this trade would certainly bolster that narrative.

This hasn't upgraded the defense which is the problem come playoff time.

100% agree. But the goal here was to free up cap and a spot on the D for an upgrade. (Lili or Brodie would need to be moved out, unlikely with Brodie it happens in the same deal that brings someone in).

I'd also argue it makes the team better defensively. Garland has strong defensive metrics and the third line hasn't been great defensively, he could help solidify it.

Yea I think any team "should" do this. The exception being if they can get move value for their retention slot which is why I left it a little open ended as to who specifically would be the third party.

    Leafs need Brodie rn

    What exactly do they need?

For Toronto the biggest selling point on Brodie has always been that he is reliable. He isn't physical, offensive, gifted, smart. By no measure is "great" at anything. What makes him valuable is that he is reliable, you know what you are getting and you know he can be relied on defensively. That's why he was beside Gio when he won the Norris and Rielly for the last few years.

Problem is he isn't so reliable anymore.

For a team like Dallas or Vancouver who just don't have 4 top 4 D he has loads of value cause he is still a top 4 guys.

For Toronto who needs to win a cup this year, they need a reliable partner for Rielly and a reliable partner for Klingberg. They don't need stars with them just reliable, defensive D. Brodie isn't that anymore.

So when you say Toronto needs Brodie is it because you genuinely think Brodie is the best partner for Rielly or is it because you are scared of messing with the failing formula of the last 4 years and making moves to bring in Tanev, Oleksiak, Borgen, Hakanpaa, etc. to try something different?

I get Brodie is a top DFD but without him being as reliable I'm the past I truly don't understand when people say Toronto "NEEDS" him.

What you dont seem to get is this

Brodie is Toronto's best Dman take him away and that Dcore falls apart. He had the second best defensive stats last year since analytics were looked at so hey will take that over any bad overly physical Dman.

You think that Dcores gonna lead to anything good let me tell yah its a disaster waiting to happen. From contender to Lottery team

And as for Brodie hes been very good with Rielly so far so I dont know where your getting that nonsense from. He had 1 bad game and another where he started off wrong but adjusted well for the end.

    https://moneypuck.com/lines.htm

Brodie plays well with him and if you shift him to the left he can also play well with an all offensive guy like Klingberg.

So yes they do need him cant see it cant help yah.

Adding a Dman while keeping Brodie is the way

Brodie is trash but Domi is worth what he gets paid at 3-3.5m maybe even a tad more and he's a great teammate, there are brand new guys there give it time and the team has 4 superstar options to score so it's not easy to get a ton of points elsewhere but he is very valuable to the team

Canucks are looking to move Garland to get cap space for this year and beyond. This trade doesn't do that which it doesn't for this year. Canucks decline especially having to give up a higher draft pick. Just no.

Remember Bear is rehabbing and is likely to resign with Van on a one year deal who will shore up their right side once healthy.

So paying someone $2.5M with $1.45M in retention is more than $4.95M?

Maybe someone needs to take grade 1 math again.
