Monahan is gonna cost someone a first round pick.

He's been a STUD with the habs when healthy.

Devils decline. No reason to sell off a depth piece to a possible playoff rival

Monahan will cost what the market dictates. IDK if it will cost a first, but if he's able to stay healthy and keeps playing the way he has when healthy as a Hab, then I think the team's preference would be to try to re-sign him than get a 2nd+. And I think Montreal would have a pretty decent chance to re-sign him.

Lajoie is a decent depth piece too, the Foote for Lajoie swap is moreso so the Leafs have more RHD depth.

The devils have Hamilton, Miller, Marino and Nemec all ahead of Foote in the depth chart and get to bank a pick that can be flipped for a more pressing need later in the season.

That's fair too, Monahan has looked really solid.

But I think his value will be closer to Barbashev's than O'Rielly's come the trade deadline. Time will tell what his true value is amongst the league.

The philosophy of Kent Hughes is " I only trade my players if I get an offer that I can't refuse.". He will wait until a GM paid MASSIVELY for Monahan and he will trade him after that.....

In theory that works, but if you're too rigid in your asking price you could be left with no legitimate trade partners.

I'd be surprised if Monahan fetches a first, but lesser players have fetch more than I previously though so it remains to be seen
