my TDL

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 31, 2023
Published: Oct. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner drops to third line to spread the wealth, similar to HBK line of the Pittsburgh B2B days. His ice time doesn't get impacted. Also lets the Leafs use the draw of playing with Matthews to bring Kane in. 3 very nasty lines, all with a good balance of offensive weapons and defensive prowess. 4th line is an optimal defensive grinder line. On D, swapping out Klingberg for Dumba lets the Leafs keep an offensive element and get a bit better defensively, while adding Tanev slots everyone down appropriately and gives the Leafs a legit shutdown RHD to use either with Mo or as a shutdown unit. Gio gets to rest up and be 7th D, with Timmins more likely to draw in if one of the offensive D, Rielly and Dumba, went down. In Woll I trust - Leafs are 3 NHL options deep so I'm ok with goaltending assuming Woll stays solid - he can come back down to earth, but as long as it's not crashing down - I don't expect that, he's unbelievably calm and technically sound.

Marlies forward depth in Holmberg, Reaves, and McMann should be plenty to plug in should the 4th line falter. Added Pulju as well, can play on the Marlies assuming he doesn't get NHL offers elsewhere which is looking increasingly likely, and if he could be an option to come up, great.

Marner's ice time won't be drastically impacted - it'll come down from what it is now, as it should - but will still be in the 19-21min per night range by the time you account for mid game adjustments, PP and PK, etc. Ice will very much be spread across the top 3 lines with 4th line taking grinder minutes and D zone starts where needed. D minutes will also be relatively spread across all pairs if healthy.

Got them to retain Laughton to exactly 2.4m for a reason - would ship out Kampf in the offseason, have Laughton play 3C (or 3LW if Minten is ready) and bring Holmberg up for 4C.

1st rounder for a third liner seems more than fair to me - don't really care if not, could achieve the same idea with a different trade. Would say the same about Sundqvist in terms of being able to find another deal that meets that criteria, though I do have to say - how much value do you think a 4th liner who had to settle for a 1yr league min contract is worth? Maybe you're thinking the Blues will make the playoffs and want him? I'm assuming the Blues miss in this post.

- A 1st rounder pushed three drafts into the future plus a piddly retention amount taking up a slot for three seasons = can't imagine Philly is tempted.

- For starters, Sunny wasn't "forced to take minimum" - he took it to come back to St. Louis, which he loves (and the feeling is mutual). Some things aren't about "trade value". He's worth more to the Blues than whatever mid round pick he could fetch in trade. Secondly, we already know he's worth more than a 5th as he just went for a 4th a few months ago carrying thrice the cap hit. And frankly even that was a mini-bargain. He's not just "a 4th liner". He's can play C or W, consistently provides 1.5 P/60 per game at evens, kills pens like a beast and can effectively play up the line-up in a pinch. He's not going anywhere, especially on a minimum salary, let alone for a lowball tidbit.

There’s a reason GMs are offering 1sts and more for Laughton he’s not just a “3rd liner” or GMs could toffee way less fro some other 3rd liner. Flyers would have no interest in that deal above they can move Laughton for just as much with no retention and without giving up a 3rd.

Yup didn’t even mention the 1st is in 3 years when they turned down 2023 1sts for him. Makes no sense to skip out on getting a 1st in a historically stacked 1st round but take one in 4 drafts after that 😂

if he's so incredible why didn't the Blues toss him a few more years on the contract or some more AAV? Something tells me he doesn't love St. Louis enough to throw millions away. St. Louis even threw him in a trade for Nick Leddy not even a year and a half ago. A 4th for him is conceivable, maybe even more likely - but to suggest its such an insane lowball at a 5th vs a 4th is a bit much. Also keep in mind him being dealt for a 4th came after his most productive season in 3 years, we'll see if he can repeat that. A rental 4th liner who can play 3rd in a pinch whose offensive production is nothing special isn't fetching more than a 4th. And he's just a rental - if STL is out of the playoffs and he has a good season why wouldn't they trade him? In that case he'd prob be making more next year and could even come back to STL.

All that to say - if STL won't deal him, don't really care because there's plenty of options for getting a 4th liner at that price point.

I think the market for Laughton isn't going to come close to the rumors this summer, but I'd trade him for that. I don't mind the first being 3 years away --- actually prefer it for teams that have a lot of contract uncertainty around them like the Leafs will the next year or two.

yup, the rumours almost always come in way hotter than the actual deal value. Laughton for anything more than a 1st would surprise me, I think the 1st being 3 years away fits the Michkov timeline better, and it could make sense for both sides.

Arizona doesn't do that in the first place, but now you expect them to flip him? Zero point in either of those options.
I do not understand why everybody thinks the Coyotes are going to trade Dumba right now

this is at the TDL. Absolutely they will trade him then. And why wouldn't they be able to retain and flip Domi to a contender to bring in a larger return than just trading Dumba alone?
