Mythological Beasts

Description
I am referring, of course, to the mythological beast of the "aggressive GM" that sees a team that's already experiencing a lot of change and decides to take advantage of not having to worry about screwing with team chemistry.

Picks may need to be adjusted, maybe future mid-round additions or prospects attached to the Kuemper and/or Nylander trades, but generally this feels like ballpark what the Caps would be comfortable with, at max, in terms of mortgaging the future. Assuming, of course, the existence of mythological creatures.

Kuemper-for-Gibson is the least likely, both because Darcy would have to have left Anaheim off his NTC, and because the Ducks don't really "need" to make that move, although it does net them long-term cap savings and a couple extra picks.

The Canadian teams are probably going to be forced into trades like these if they can't/won't get extension talks moving.

With Edmunson and Patches moving on, an expected significant increase in the cap, and possibly an Oshie retirement and/or Kuzy trade, I fully expect the Caps to be able to extend both Hanifin and Nylander and their three key RFAs (McMichael, Sandin, and Protas) while having room for promotions for Vincent, Ivan, and Hendrix.

If you change Phillips to McMichael you’d be closer to a deal. Something around a 1st + McMichael + Jensen has a good feel to it. Maybe toss in that 3rd round pick or Protas but Phillips doesn’t fit what Leafs management is looking for

I recognize that Keumper is a good goalie, but also as I predicted back when he signed that deal, he was going to be exposed as not a great goalie. Given he's a few years older than Gibson, I don't see Anaheim having interest in that.

We're also pretty happy with Leason and Carrick as our Tone line. The biggest headache with this trade is that we don't have to make it, we'd be exchanging some pieces were happy with now for more futures. I just don't think that's in the teams best interest.

We'll still be selling pieces this TDL, but it'll be for pieces that aren't a part of the future. Gibson and Leason still have a spot here.

If it comes to the deadline and Nylander hasn’t signed an extension, his value isn’t as high as Leafs fans like you think it would be. The Mark Stone trade then becomes the best comparable, hence the package I suggested.

He's got a point in every game this season. He's an absolute stud, his value is immense.
