They should just buy him out this summer before giving up all of that. His buyout cap hit isn't prohibative.

Dont think NHL teams are allowed to give out picks or conditions on picks that far out. Also dont think they are allowed to do that in hockey

That’s probably the route they’ll go, but that doesn’t help them in the meantime. 6 years of dead cap isn’t ideal, even with the cap going up but with McDavid and Leon due for raises, every penny is going to count.

I don’t think it’s ever been done but I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be allowed. It’s common place in the NBA and I’m sure this draft pick movement will become common place in the NHL in short order.

There's no rule against it.

Do you have a link? I looked it up and couldn’t find a definitive rule that said how many years in advance picks can be traded or that this condition is explicitly prohibited.

I remember it from an Eliotte Friedman podcast. I can try to find it but im pretty sure he said only 5 years of picks. So 24,25,26,27 and 28 right now Not 100% sure tho

Fair, but the pick isn’t actually being traded. It’s an option on a pick given to Philadelphia on a draft pick that is still held by Edmonton until exercised by PHI at the future date. May not be practical for EDM in this trade but it’s possible those options won’t be called by PHI

The farthest pick out that's ever been traded was 5 years. Wayne Gretzky was traded in 1988 and a 1993 1st round pick was part of the return package.

However, there's nothing in the rules that prevents a team from trading a pick further out. It has just never happened before.

There is no rule. You can trade picks as far out as you want. It's just that nobody would value a pick 10 years from now really.

You can do pick swaps as long as there are no illegal conditions. So if its just that they get to pick between the Phili and Edmonton pick within 24hrs of the draft lottery each year you can do that. Its more prohibitive than you think because Edmonton still has a first in those years that becomes hard to trade so most teams rather just give up the pick instead of these swaps.

A million and a half over 6 years is probably worth a prospect or a first round pick, but i would just release him than pay a punitive amount
