You probably have to give up 1st + 3rd + 3rd for Tanev and Zadorov at 50% retained, without any picks going back to Toronto. Tanev and Zadorov are near perfect targets for the Leafs, and the Flames wouldn’t be worried about taking back Klingberg.

Calgary may even be able to extract more value from those two depending on the market…but yeah, it makes a lot of sense for the Leafs. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see them target Vladar.

Flames aren't taking on Klingberg. You can trade us one of Timmins or Liljegren the. Get double retention on one of the defenseman. Thats the only way you are making the cap work

If they are in a position where they are selling both Zadorov and Tanev, they would absolutely take on Klingberg. Teams selling don't force teams to pay for double-retention to acquire rentals; that would mean that they aren't too serious about trading their guys away. Trading with any team will require money in = money out for the most part. I wouldn't rule out one of Liljegren or Timmins being dealt but that would probably change what the package looks like.

The only thing that would probably get in the way of this trade, is that Treliving might feel like the cost is too rich for the Leafs , but more importantly Klingberg's NTC. ComixZone's suggestion of a 3rd instead of Voit+Niemela while dropping one or both of the CGY picks is probably more reasonable.

Um no. Toronto's cap issues are not Calgary's problem. Calgary would have interest in Timmins and Liljegren, they would have zero interest in Klingberg. Zadorov and Tanev will garner immense interest league wide, the Flames aren't under any obligation to trade both to Toronto just because Toronto wants them

Every contending team who would inquire on Zadorov or Tanev is up against the cap just like the leafs. If Calgary wants to move those guys for assets they’re going to have to take back salary.

Taking back salary is not the issue. Teams have useful players that Calgary could want. The above trade has Calgary burning 2 of their 3 retention slots while also taking on a rental contract back. Calgary still has Hanifin and Lindholm who are far more valuable for that final retention slot than Klingberg so taking back Klingberg is worthless to Calgary. There's no benefit

A third team has even less reason to help the Leafs (and Flames) make this deal.

The benefit is making the trade, do you think that teams acquiring Tanev or Zadorov don't want their "useful" players? The Leafs would just have to pay for that retention. At the end they are going to just take whatever they deem as the best offer (or re-sign some guys), so if they have similar offers but with a guy who they deem as more useful to their team then obviously they will take that deal instead.

If the Flames are using retention slots on Hanifin and Lindholm that would just mean that they won't retain on both Zadorov and Tanev, not that they won't take Klingberg (because of the inability to flip him at 50%).

I think you undervalue what teams will do for a free asset. Last year Minnesota was involved as the 3rd team in multiple trades simply because they had so much extra cap space at the deadline and the free pick was well worth the actual money they would be paying to retain on a player. A team like Nashville for example is poised to have 28M in cap space at the TDL and even if they are sellers they really only have Barrie worth retaining anything on.

I really don't think you are getting the whole "no value" thing. Klingberg does nothing for Calgary. Flames would be more interested in taking back Jarnkrok for example because he can at least fill a roster spot next year. There are no positive reasons to take on Klingberg, especially in a trade like this

Flames will have to make a choice on 3 players who they wanna retain and the odd man out of Hanifin,Lind,Tanev and Zadorov will stay. Cuz noone is taking their full cap. The Devils Should be heavy in on Zadorov and in on Tanev.

Yeah, I'm not saying that no team would do it, but they have less of a reason than the Flames to help the Leafs. Of course, if the Flames have better options then they have better options, but if they don't they aren't going to say "No, Klingberg has no value to us." No one is saying that they have to trade both guys in a single trade or to the Leafs, just that taking back Klingberg isn't as much of a deal breaker as you're making it out to be: to the point that the Leafs must bring in a 3rd party. It depends on what other offers look like. (Edit: It also depends on when the trade is happening, if this were to happen now, then I would agree).

Klingberg, at the very, least could fill a roster spot for the year and probably play the PP if they end up trading Hanifin assuming he doesn't return a young NHL D replacement. There's also the possibility, that Conroy would actually be interested in/ open to signing Klingberg next year (whether they are rebuilding or competing) on a 1-year deal. There are always those players that aren't wanted on CF but some GM wants them (maybe Treliving will still want him).

Calgary declines hard. Either defenseman will fetch around a 1st and a 3rd without taking back trash too.

You don't get it do you? Zadorov likely won't be going anywhere because we want to keep and extend him. Get back to this post after the puck drops next season and tell me I was right.

CGY may want to keep him but who wants to play for a tire fire. Gudreau left Takchuk left the whole D core is next.

Yes thank you,

Playoff GM " hey lets trade for a solid D" " maybe we could give up a middle 6 player before we go into the playoffs that seems smart"

GM fired.

You’re not subtracting from your lineup if you have aspirations of a deep playoff run lol

exactly no GM who wants to keep their job will ship out a roster player who has value for another player, it just doesnt make sense.

I think you are getting confused with what I meant here. When I said useful player I was implying someone who could play on the team next year and then potentially be flipped or someone cheap who is involved to make the cap work. like Hakanpaa and Faksa from Dallas, Bastian from Jersey, or Trent and Geekie from Boston.

As for really useful players that were moved to make cap space, Vatrano instantly comes to mind. Beauvillier was moved in the Horvat trade too. There was also Vrana in the Mantha trade (though that one ended up backfiring for both teams).
