For some reason, I’m of the belief that Tanev does better than Zadorov in free agency. Am I missing something here?

Tanev definitely brings in more than zadorov but this is actually an overpayment for tanev but I’m fine with it

Zadorov is 28 and should try to cash in on the next contract. Tanev is almost 34 and could instead play it safe with a 3-4 year contract at lower aav, in case of injury. Not saying he'd take a discount for a contender and his hometown team, but part of the return for Tanev could be based on whether he is a pure rental or intends on re-signing. If Leafs can't afford him next season then it's an overpay.

Tanev is a significantly better defender and should 100% be the leafs target out of calgary.

Age is always a consideration. It’s a good point that Zadorov is younger. Tanev is a better player now and part of me believes he will be even with the expected decline. I don’t think Zadorov is worth as much as others

The ultimate would be Leafs trade for Tanev and then he & Brodie both re-sign at hometown discounts.

Zadorov will likely cost somewhere between $4.5-$5.25mil/yr to sign for 3-6 years

On the open market, Tanev might be able to get the same, but based on his age, it’d only be on a 1-2 year term

Now, if it was VAN or TOR on the other hand, I could see Tanev giving them some kind of Sweetheart Team Friendly Deal for just $3-4mil/yr x 2-3yrs

Tanev’s the Better Defender without question and should bring back a greater trade return than Zadorov, but Big-Z is a Rare Breed, Can Skate Well and Will Produce Decemt Offence for a Big Man
