You think that this squad can play at a 110 point pace for the rest of the season? Because that is what the Oilers need to do to make the playoffs.

Josh Anderson is struggling a bit but Habs have abundant cap space so no need to shed his contract urgently; at least he can still play an NHL shift at least. High picks and prospects would need to be added.

Even if a skater and goaltender are equal in terms of a bad contract, the forward still holds more value.
You have 14 spots and a lot of cap space to stash a bad forward contract, but you only have 2 goaltending spots (ideally) and don't want to be devoting a disproportionate amount to the position.
Cap space spent on the NHL roster is better than cap space spent on players in the minors.
