Description
Just a random turkey-fueled idea I had. Kaapo Kakko has shown flashes and improved since entering the league, but hasn't quite realized his potential from when he was drafted. This season, he has put up just 2 goals and an assist for 3 points in 17 games, with neither he nor Blake Wheeler being able to fill the shoes of the departed Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane. With the Rangers firmly in win-now mode, would they consider moving Kakko despite his draft pedigree and possible untapped potential for a more immediate contributor? Jordan Eberle got off to a bit of a slow start, but since returning from a scary skate cut injury, he has improved his output for a total of 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points in 18 games. Eberle also put up 20 goals and 43 assists for 63 points last season. He's a proven top-6 RW who would be an appealing target for teams looking for a scoring boost if the Kraken decide to execute a sort of soft sell and reload for next season, although time will tell on that. Kakko meanwhile would get a fresh start on an up-and-coming team that has been able to get a lot out of undervalued forwards in need of a change of scenery (Eeli Tolvanen, Daniel Sprong, and Ryan Donato, to name a few).

Do you think the Rangers or Kraken would entertain such a move? Let me know!

Kakko won’t be moved for a rental

They should continue to develop his offense and confidence

If Drury trades Kakko for a rental he wont be long for NYR.

Kakko does a lot of things well that do not show up on the scoresheet- yet the good teams (those with a realistic shot of going deep) really crave. For now- Kakko will work with Muse and the rest of the coaching staff, and we'll see what happens once Chytil returns.

If NYR decide to move on from Kakko, examples of players to target would include Morgan Frost, Shane Pinto, and Shane Wright. Who knows what the trade package would look like- with additional picks, prospects, and/or depth players included on either side of any deal. But a rental? Absolutely not!

Exactly this. Kakko is an elite defensive forward, plays below the hashes really well and his lines absolutely dominate puck posesssion. He has 3 points because he played with an absolutely snakebitten mika and Kreider. They couldn't score at 5v5 at all. Kakko was feeding them prime chances. He's now playing with Cuylle and Bonino, and Bonino is terrible offensively. Chytil comes back it'll fix the 3rd line and likely generates far more offense.
