Phil Kessel

Created by: pensfan21
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2023
Published: Dec. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I would for sure sign him. We desperately need power play help and we don't have an easy way to free up cap. To me this is the best solution. I think he would be an upgrade for our bottom 6.

Mtl won’t waste their last retention spot for this kind of offer. Some team will offer more with no retention.

Your horrible grammar aside, he put up 14G last year and 36 points last season. 12G 5v5. That's a better pace than most of the bottom-six guys are on right now.

Kessel was also a key reason for the great PP this team had because of his passing and ability to enter the zone. Is he the best possible solution? No, but he's an upgrade.

Agree completely. Need to look at in the context of how he compares to our current bottom 6 right now, not how he compares to how he used to play. He really wasn't that bad at all on the Knights last year

Keep Accairi.

We need to trade someone to free up cap. Don't know who else it'd be. Wouldn't rule out trading anyone in bottom 6 besides Eller.

How does Phil Kessel help a PP with Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel and Karlsson? Pens have Rust, Rakkel, Letang and Smith. Why is their PP so bad right now?

He helps both the power play and our bottom 6. Our power play is awful, completely stationary, predictable passing, and no net front presence. I don't think he'd solve it, but Kessel is a good power play player. And outside the powerplay he would help our bottom 6 a ton. Barely anyone in our bottom 6 scores goals. Kessel did fine last year in Vegas if he puts up similar numbers this year he'd be a big upgrade.

The Pens PP was the best it was when Phil was with the Pens and it was actually because of his passing ability. Because of how good he was at scoring goals, people really overlooked how great he was at distributing the puck. He's a GREAT set-up guy.

As far as why it's so bad right now? They do nothing but making 7,223 passes without takings shots. They're always looking for the perfect setup rather than just getting pucks on net and trying to knock in rebounds. They all need to be more selfish and shoot.
