Definite no from Winnipeg. I like Garland, but his contact is poison and a 1st isn't enough to take it. Hirose is worthless.

While both Barron and Dillon are important pieces for Winnipeg.

I was basing the trade off proposals from earlier this season where it was Garland (15% retention) for Appleton and Chisholm. Clearly that wouldn't go through now. I'm assuming Appleton and Chisholm are more important that Dillon and Barron, while adding a 1st (most like a late 1st but still) as a sweetener and Hirose as a 6th/7th dman option for losing Dillon...

The problem is, the Jets need Barron who is very good in his role and the Jets can't afford to give away a top 4 defenseman in Dillon without a better top 4 deferment coming back, while Garland would be an expensive luxury that doesn't fill a need. Hirose isn't a replacement for Dillon in any way as he'd be behind at least 4 guys on the left side alone.

It would need to be pure futures for a 50% retained Garland imo, if the Jets were to consider it.

The Jets should just re-sign Niederreiter instead of spending assets on Garland. Would this be accurate?

Connor - Scheifele - Iafallo
Ehlers - Perfetti - Valardi
Niederreiter - Lowry - Appleton
Barron - Kupari - Namestnikov

..with Fjallby, David Gustafsson and Toninato in reserve ... maybe they go for some depth at the deadline up front, injury depth etc, but taking on Garland doesn't make sense to me.

Yup, that looks about right, with Iafallo, Vallardi and Ehlers swapping around a bit. I'm really hoping the Jets can sign NN, he fits in pretty well and has been a great add since the Jets got him.

Will have to see....I think Vilardi returns to the top line eventually and that Perfetti-Namestnikov-Ehlers line is in the top 10 in the NHL in actual goal percentage (75%), so maybe Iafallo is the player who drops down to the 4th.

A 1t might be worth it; as Garland has redeemed himself a little bit this year. But Hirose doesn't move the needle for me either. Maybe a better prospect or another pick balances this out?

Actually, it's more that the Jets need Dillon and Barron and don't need Garland. Winnipeg doesn't have enough depth that they can move out two regular, contributing roster players and only get back one. Or have the depth to move out a top 4 defenseman without a top 4 defenseman upgrade coming back.

It feels like mere hours after this exchange that the Jets extended him for 3 more seasons beyond this! smile .. good move I think.
