This is robbery, you should accept. Ok you're downgrading a 2nd to a 3rd BUT :

- you're dumping Edmundson
- Kubalik is worth a 3rd at the deadline
- Brannstrom is a keeper (has Sandin qualities), trade him if you don't want to keep him, maybe in a package for a upgrade or something

Caps don't need to dump Edmundson, they have 8m in cap space
Kubalik just blocks a younger more talented player from playing (Lapierre likely)
Brannstrom would be a solid trade piece I guess

Ok so it seems like not a good fit for both teams

Considering what Ottawa is trying to do, it wouldn't make sense to trade a young rising player for a guy on the doorstep of being out of the NHL

That said, I would personally do it if I was the Caps and it was offered to me. I would trade Kubalik at the deadline for a pick (to recover some of that 2nd spent) then would either keep Brannstrom or trade him at the draft for a profit. And would enjoy the upgrade for the rest of the 2023-24 season
