That seems like a good trade for both sides.

Besides, you know, a solid second pairing defenseman, two depth pieces, and two picks...but yeah besides that there's nothing in it for Pittsburgh.

Yeah, not a single piece from the Jets is a net positive for the Pens. Every "depth piece" is entirely repetitive with the Pens current lineup.

I don't think the Pens trade Karlsson but if they did, they would need more than they sent to SJ.

Pittsburgh WILL NOT get more than they gave for Karlsson. He is another year older and not a Norris finalist. Sorry, that gamble did not work out and will not wash out either.

Usually expect this type of trade from a leafs/habs fan, I guess the delusion is moving west.

Anyways, no thanks.

Really? What was his goal % last year?
Well expected goal % was 54.4% and his actual goal % was 58%.
This year it is...54.6% and 70%
So he is playing better than last year defensively while also 8th in the NHL in points per 60.

Couple that with the fact the Pens are still "going for it" and someone would have to pay more than the Pens paid to get him.

After what they gave up for him this summer, EK has done just as well. He is one of their few players who has been great. Depth pieces and mid picks mean nothing and I could name 64 RD better than Pionk lol.

EK is a top 15 RD in the NHL, likely top 10. Come on

I like the trade tbh. Will it happen? not a chance, but if the jets were able to acquire someone of Karlsson's caliber to play the right side and the PP it would be awesome. MOre of an NHL 24 trade then a real one

So the Jets' expendable pieces are good enough to aquire ~3.5 years of EK65 with retentiom.
Pionk is a solid 2nd pairing defenseman, but he's getting paid like a 1st pairing guy for another ~1.5 years. He'snot nothing, but he's worth a lot less than Karlsson.
The problem is that the rest of the package doesn't even make a dent in the difference between Pionk and EK. Barron looks like nothing more than a 4th liner, and he doesn't provide much of an offensive impact, which is what Pittsburgh needs most from a depth aquisition. Stanley isn't even a lineup regular for Winnipeg, and the Pens already have more meh 3rd pairing LHDs than we can fit on our NHL roster. I can't see him getting time over POJ or Ludvig. Finally, a couple of middling at best picks. I honestly think the 3rd has more value than Barron or Stanley.

The breakdown for this trade is basically Pionk for EK, a 3rd rounder for a lot of retention, and Winnipeg frees up some contract slots. You want to makle a serious offer, start with a 1st and a good prospect.

Well, in this case the trade would be done because Pittsburgh doesn't want to be paying $10 million for a guy who's playing like a $7 million defenseman.

I don't agree with this sentiment at all. I'm disappointed with his work on the power play, absolutely. Also, we've had 2 games of him with Graves instead of Pettersson and I think that's negatively affecting his play. But far more often than not, I think he's performing above a $10M cap hit, not below. No competent Pens GM would even consider this.

He's on track for 58 points this year and doesn't play defense, I don't understand how thats worth more than $10 million.

For context, what would a EK for Morrisey trade look like? Take money into consideration. Pens fans have to take their GM to task.

A lot of defensive scoring comes on the power play. Some of that is Karlsson's fault, but I don't think our PP scheme works. His 22 points is 16th among defensemen despite the awful power play results, and the Pettersson-Karlsson pairing has generated the 4th most on-ice goals and xGoals of any defensive pairing, per moneypuck.
Furthermore, EK's defensive play has been solid this season. Both the Athletic and Evolving-Hockey's models back up that his defense has been positive. Sure, there are times where he makes very noticeable mistakes and I don't want him killing PKs, but to say he doesn't play defense doesn't match either the eye test or the analytics.
