In a vacuum the value is somewhat close but I think the caps would be foolish to move their first rounder right now. A 2025 second and 2024 mid-late pick for those two combined would be closer in value I think.

That being said, the caps have such an insane logjam on their roster that they need to move some bodies out before even considering bringing anyone in. They are in a weird position of having plenty of cap space and not even close to enough roster space, on top of the fact that they do need to add a legit top 6 scoring threat.

I imagine a few roster players would need to be included in the deal to not only alleviate some cap space but alleviate some roster spots. Malestyn and/or Dowd come to mind.

Columbus accepts, although a pick this year would be preferred over next year, and Peeke probably doesn't cost you a 4th. A 2024 6th is probably fine/more realistic.

seen some version of this deal so much recently and i really don't get it. this caps team is not one Tarasenko away from competing and could very easily miss the playoffs. I only see them giving up a first for a young player that hasn't quite broken out yet -- see Sandin last year or what MTL did with Dach and Newhook. Only player on the sens that really fits that bill is Pinto

Would Washington pay a 5th round pick for Kubalik ?

What does Kubalik do for them that Oshie, Milano, Pacioretty, Lapierre, Miroshnichenko, Phillips doesnt???? He's not even scoring that much, 9 points in 31 games is not very good.

Depth is not the problem for this team, it's elite scoring talent. Once again unless Pinto, Batherson, Norris, Greig, Chabot, Chychrun are available I don't see the caps being that interested in anyone.

    1. He's usually a 20 goal scorer with a wicked one-timer.

Last year, he played on Detroit's 1st line with Larkin and Perron.

He was also a key player on the #1 PP with the Wings and the Hawks.

We've decided to use him as a 3rd line checker instead and it hasn't worked out.

    Context matters.

    2. Oshie, Milano and Pacioretty are all on IR.

    3. The players on the Sens you've listed are all way more expensive.

If I told you how much each of them cost, you would be complaining way more than you are right now over a 5th round pick.

    4. I think you're more interested in whining and complaining about AGMs involving the Caps as opposed to building a winning hockey team in Washington again.

    1. You could say all the same things about Kuznetsov, does it make Ottawa not a serious team to not be interested in him?
    2. Pacioretty is coming back next game, Oshie and Milano back within 2 weeks at most
    3. I understand that elite talent costs more than a 5th round pick
    4. I don't really see how adding a guy with 9 points in 31 games who can't carve out a role on will help build a winning team in Washington again. The caps' biggest problem is scoring. I don't think adding a guy whos absolute ceiling with top-line teammates and #1pp time is putting up 20-20-40 is very conducive to them winning more games.
