William Nylander Trade

Created by: JustNinjaShep
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 2, 2024
Published: Jan. 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the Trade Deadline coming up, it looking clear that the Leafs aren't a Cup Contender & that Nylander looks like he'll be leaving as a UFA I decided to make another go at an Armchair GM on a William Nylander Trade Deadline deal. Let me know what you all think!
Trades
TOR
  1. Kakko, Kaapo
  2. Quick, Jonathan
  3. Robertson, Matthew
  4. 2024 1st round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Kakko has been good on the Rangers kid line & I'd imagine he would play on the wing on the Leafs 2nd line

Quick has proven himself to be a solid Backup in the league with the Rangers & he's a proven Playoff performer with the Kings earlier in his career. Quick would be a 1B alongside Joseph Woll & possibly even start in the Playoffs for the Leafs depending on which goalie has been performing better down the stretch

Matthew Robertson is a Rangers prospect who's a defender. This is his 3rd season playing for the Rangers AHL team so he's close to being ready for NHL action. He's a big defensively responsible defender & I imagine him playing on the Leafs 3rd pairing next season & possibly being ready this season if a guy like Giordano's game falls off if Giordano is still expected to be their 6th defender
NYR
  1. Nylander, William ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
It's looking clear that Nylander will walk as a UFA this off-season as the Leafs can't afford to extend him. They're also not looking like a Cup contender which is why the Leafs should trade him as a top deadline piece to a Cup Contender like the Rangers

Leafs certainly don't need Jones for the playoffs, since the Leafs are much worse without Nylander.
Kakko and Robertson are kinda meaningless, so it's a late first for Nylander....no thanks.

Willy might be off the board, maybe give them Marner but not till the summer?

Easy pass for Leafs.
Nylander belongs in Toronto not NYR.

Marner has a full NMC and likely a massive salary demand for his next deal.

Ya I agree, but I still think that could be a spot for Marner, either of the New York teams or maybe Chicago. Marner doesn’t have the west coast Stylee like Willy does…

And if they ask him to waive it will be a Tkachuk type trade I would think.

In a trade for Marner the return would look different than what I've posed here obviously

I think this trade makes sense because the Rangers are already one of the Cup favourites & adding Nylander would just further to help their chances

While the Leafs are not even a Cup Contender & picking up Two 22yr olds who will help them long term, a Late 1st rounder & someone in Quick who can mentor the Leafs Rookie Joseph Woll seems good to me. Young Goalies seem to thrive most long term when playing under/beside a proven elite veteran goalie. While Quick isn't what he once was he's a 3 time cup champ & was very impactful in 2 of those Cup wins. Heck he's the main reason the Kings won the Cup back in 2012

laugh Since an 8 x $11,250,000 offer to William Nylander is close at hand, We now can assume that he's absolutely going nowhere.

We genuinely couldn’t afford the extension and we honestly don’t have another backup to take over for Quick and he’s somehow been pretty much vital this year.

How selfish of you, thinking of the "other team", (in this case the Rangers) and not the Leafs.

I should’ve known better. On the bright side, how do you feel about the reported offer to Nylander right now.

Just a little background. On virtually all UFA signings, I'm neutral. If the team think it fair value...making the signing, but an overpay...well maybe it's best to look elsewhere to spend the cap.
Even seven years might be too much....but I certainly wouldn't do eight years, as Nylander will. be 28 years of age after this season.
I don't know of any team that would spend 11m for Nylander (although he may be worth it) so I kinda think the Leafs would be "bidding against themselves " once you get much above 10.5m.

But if it's all amount $$$$ for Nylander and demanding top dollar, maybe he isn't the guy you really want on the team, though I can't blame a player if he goes that route.

It's like a popular girl at school you would like to date. So you ask for dinner at House of Pancakes, but she demands that you take her to the Olive Garden...cause that's why other guys take her. Well maybe she isn't for you.

Love the analogy there. Thanks for sharing.
