I guess the question is whether Weeger who turns 30 this weeks is good value for 7.5 years.

Probably good value until he is 34. Last 3 years maybe not so much!

Top pair right handed defenceman don't go for that cheap.. would almost certainly include 1 of Cowan or Minten on top of the 2024 1st and Niemela unless Toronto was willing to include Liljegren (which makes a ton of sense). Samsonov doesn't offer any value to Calgary, he only blocks Wolf from developing - Toronto can figure out their own cap problems if Weegar puts them in a bad situation.

This just doesn't make any sense for Calgary as is.

Hronek got a 1st and a 2nd last year. He was not a pure rental and was a top pair RD for many years for Detroit.

Of course this 1st is going to be later than the one Detroit got. But let's say 2 x 3rds = 2nd. Niemela + 1st, more than makes up the difference between the 1st. Niemela is a very solid RD prospect, having a really good year in the AHL. Of course you have Ruzika in here and Sammys cap. Both of which wouldn't cost a ton. Maybe I am slightly shot. But it's not wild.

That pick Detroit got for Hronek is a very good prospect. Sandin-Pellika. But you see the glaring hole on their RD now. There's no guarantee a top prospect will pan out at the NHL level.

Who exactly are you expecting Calgary to ice a defense with next season?

They're most likely trading pending UFA's Tanev and Hanifin. They already traded Zadorov.

And now trade Weegar? A guy they just locked up for 8 years?

You're expecting them to bottom out and tank? Just so the Leafs can improve their D?

Weegar is not going anywhere.

Niemela to me doesn't make sense the flames have shown interest in the past to abruzzese a prospect with almost equal value to Niemela. And the the leafs are more likely to move Timmins he makes more money and that doesn't leave calgary playing their ahl defense in the nhl. Wouldn't Greer make more sense then Ruzicka he's older and makes less. A Weeger trade isn't impossible but more would need to be sent Calgary's way.

Abruzzesse and Niemela have completely different values.
Abruzzesse is 24 years old offensive forward putting up mediocre AHL stats. He has little value.
Niemela is a 21 RD, who won best dman at the 2021 world champs, who is have a very strong year in the AHL right now. He would be valued at as an early 2nd or late 1st.

Abruzzese and Niemela are not remotely close in value. Niemela is arguably worth a late 2nd, Abruzzese might return a 5th at most.

Calgary wouldn't make this trade though
