Offer Sheet Draisaitl

Description
I remember when Oiler GM Kevin Lowe offer sheeted Vanek at 7 years and $50 million. How about a little poetic justice? They'd match it, but then they'd be in cap trouble starting next year with McDavid and Draisaitl combining for $22 million, which will probably be a little more than a quarter of the cap. Most importantly, that's the exact amount of cap space they have for next season. They'd probably have to trade RNH, Nurse, Strome, and Caggiula for young players on cheap deals (that won't even be that good) and picks, and let Maroon and Letestu walk (who have been big pieces for them). I think it is a necessary move for someone not to let Chiarelli sign Draisaitl for a team friendly contract so he can surround him and McJesus with good pieces. Vegas should absolutely make this offer for that reason. You weaken a division opponent, you have draft picks to spare, and you need a franchise pivot. But since I'm a Sabre fan, I want to see him join our top 6. And with our prospects we can plug in for cheap and the ability to buy out Moulson, Bogosian and/or Pominville, we could actually make the cap work even with new deals for Jack, Kane/Reinhart (but probably not both), and Antipin if he's good.

Not worth the assets seeing as we already have 3 top-6 centers in Buffalo and another one on the way in Mittelstadt.

Just thinking ahead to when you have to resign Reinhart and Eichel...not sure if offer sheeting Draisaitl is the best choice. I guess you'll have to let Evander Kane walk and maybe Chad Johnson

Buffalo can't offer sheet Draisaitl like this because they don't have a 2018 3rd round pick. The only way would be to give him more money and send 4 first round picks to Edmonton.

again, i think edmonton matches it. but getting an earlier 3rd round pick would not be an issue. we could offer a later pick and our 3rd in 2019 for a 3rd in 2018 and someone will take it.

it has to be your 3rd round pick. all picks used in offer sheet compensation must be the team's picks.

I don't think Draisatl signs the offer sheet. There's a good mood in Edmonton, he'll have success there. He can make a deal to become a UFA as soon as possible instead of big dollar long term deal -- best of both worlds.

What am I missing here? If we sign Draisatl for $9,250,000, what will Eichel and Reinhart want, $12,500,000 and $9,250,000 respectively? That makes our cap hit over $30,000,000 for 3 players. I like the idea of an offer sheet but why so much, Draisatl is not Vanek and has not had any season to make it look as he will perform to the $9,250,000 level.

BTW, we should have let Vanek walk and start the rebuild back then. We would have had the oilers next 4 1st round picks plus our 1st round picks. Edmonton ended up having the 22nd pick in 2008, 10th in 2009, 1st in 2010, and 1st. in 2011, Edmonton on the other hand finished in last by 12 points in 2010 and by 6 points in 2011. So Vanek would not have helped them much. EDM and BUF picks each of the 4 years In 2008 Jordan Eberle/Tyler Myers & Tyler Ennis, 2009 Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson/Zack Kassian, 2010 Taylor Hall/Mark Pysyk and 2011 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Joel Armia. All exept Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson are current NHL players. That is how to jump start a rebuild.
