No thanks. Trading Weegar doesn't make sense right now. We only have 2 NHL defensemen signed for next year and trading one isn't smart especially since no one wants to sign with us

If Calgary was adamant to remove what is only their second guaranteed contract on defense next year. Yes this is a decent trade. I like it for Toronto. Good futures for Calgary but they would be 5 defenseman short next year.

Even if that package was enough value-wise, the Flames would likely want more out of Treliving or an equivalent package that includes some untouchable like Knies, Cowan or Minten.

Niemela to pay for taking on Samsonov. That leaves a 1st and 2 3rds. Quite underwhelming

Brother... you know that it won't cost Niemela to take on Samsonov.

You have been around here enough that dead expiring contracts move at the deadline in a trade like this, to make the deal work. All the time. And it doesn't cost much to do so. At WORST it costs a 3rd to dump Sammy. So 1st + Niemela + 3rd round pick. And Niemela currently has quite a bit more value than a 3rd.

I think Niemela is worth a mid 2nd right now. Even with your breakdown that isn't a good deal for Calgary

This I can accept.

But there is also another lower end prospect in the deal also. I am okay if you think I am a bit short. But I don't think it's by much if any at all.

A Canucks fan was asking the price for Weegar the other day and I told him 1st + Willander/Brtzustewics + Raty. I think that is roughly what it would cost for Calgary to consider moving him. Top 20 defensemen at more than fair cap hits and lots of term simply don't come cheap and Calgary values what he brings to the team highly. If you can't match that price you probably aren't going to pry him from the Flames. The cost to acquire Weegar would be on par with the cost to acquire Devon Toews
